Transparent background on favicon

Hi All,

Just a quick general question.

I notice on here that the favicon.ico has a transparent background and I was wondering how this was acheived. Every one I make seems to appear on a white background.

Any pointers would be great.

It's driven me mad for about 2 years and would love to know how its done. Hopefully Mr Graphics Department will be along some time soon and lighten my life lol.

Basically you need to use a .png or a .gif. Actually never tried with a .gif as I tend to use .png file exclusively. So a .png original with transparency… no magic whatsoever!

Can confirm a .gif with transparency will work just as well. But use a .png anyway, they're better :-)

Hi, thanks for the replys.

I normaly save them as a .gif then use This site to generate them which always puts them on a white background.

Do you guys do it a differant way and what programs do you use ??

What image editor do you use? Nearly all of them will let you save an image as a transparent .gif, and most will support .png too.

To answer second part of your question, I use Photoshop.

You could try using this tool:

Not tried it myself though.

EDIT: I use this plugin to create the .ico file:
