I've got a magazine called Rending the Veil where I use this forum. I also use it here. A year or so back I asked about a link I could put across the top bar of my magazine site, that would link to the forum and automatically indicate whether there were new posts on the forum since the person's last visit to the site in general. This would draw more traffic to my sorely inactive forums.

Any word on a feature like that?

Yes – there is the sf_new_posts_tag() which does just this. Not sure without checking how long that has been available but it is in 4.2.
