Andy,

the real issue is not personal feelings or an override… The fact is that there are just 2 of us here on SPF that code… so we have to pick and choose what we can do. one guy hacking code or another one or two requesting a feature are fine, but we tend to do the ones that have ten or twenty requests first. also, since this is a hobby for us, sometimes we just pick the ones that make us happy too… we dont make any money off this project, so all I can do is apologize if we cant cater to everyone's desires… we simply try…

Don't worry Andy, I'm not one of the developers so my opinions don't carry much weight :) I'm sure when there's enough demand for the feature it will eventually be include.

yes, with v4.2 (currently, in Release Candidate 1), you can set a default option for users to be auto subscribed to topics they post in.

Hi, I just upgraded to 4.2 gold but still could not find how to set "auto-subscribed" to be a default for every user. Could u please give me which setup menu I do need to change. Thank you

I believe that will start to effect new users as they register. We do not update existing users own profile preference setting.

>>  but I would question the logic of setting up a forum in the first place if they just want to use it as a mailing list. If it works now, why change <<

Because the goal is to migrate to a forum, where posts are organized in topics and threads, are preserved over time for future reference, add to the searchable content of the site,… (and a million other reasons).

We do host a number of other bulletin-board/web forum systems that do support forum access (reading/posting) via NNTP (news reader), SMTP (email) in addition to HTTP. It's quite common for "full" forum solutions, to include mailing list support. So – normally this is never an "either/or" decision. Forum software with mailing list support is the norm, not the exception.

Since this client will try to manage their site with their in-house resources that are non-technical, we are hoping to reduce their learning curve by using WordPress plug-ins for their limited "shop" and their low-frequence "forum" – rather than them having to learn multiple "full powered" systems.

Best Regards,

Andy

On one of my SimplePress forums, several users have requested subscription to a forum, or even notification on any new topic.

I tried using the RSS feeds, but the feeds are blank.  Is this becuase the forums are not public, but require user have permissions?

Because the forums are private, RSS may not be an option.  Anyone can point me to code where I could try hacking a subscribe to forum function?

On the RSS front first – if you turn on the feedkey option then when one of your registered users clicks on one of the RSS buttons the RSS url generated will include that unique feedkey which will be passed into SP every time their feedreader polls your site. People without a feedkey will get nothing back.

Adding a subscribe function at forum level is a little more complex that a hack. You will need to create database entries to maintain lists of what user is subscribed to what plus a list of which users are subscribed at forum level. These will need updating for every change. You will need a UI and you will need the processing code plus the email code to send out notifications. You will also need to check with your host that they will allow 'bulk' email sending as some wont.

I am being frivolous you understand, but it is tempting to say if you are able to code all of the above then (a) you can probably find your own way through the code and (b) would you like to join the SP team!

But… forum rendering code is in the /forum folder. Most suport routines are in sf-support in the /library folder as is the database handling.
