This is a seriously awkward scenario.  I have been running your forums for wordpress with no problems on a few other sites, and have never seen this issue that i'm having now.  I am helping a friend with a site called Report Your Ex.  I installed and setup his forum for him, and now it is doing some crazy error.

I am not a programmer, so this is extremely awkward to me.

Here is an example of a normal forum page (notice the sidebar widgets that ARE in place)

http://reportyourex.com/home/f…..riend/#p32

….and now….

here is the error that we are incurring with a thread that has been having some activity the last few days.

http://reportyourex.com/home/f…..ornia/#p50

as you can see, the sidebar is now missing, there also seems to be a huge problem with the margin on the forum.  As well, the most recent post only contains the first few characters of the actual post.  And lastly, there is obviously some sort of strange error with the footer on that particular page.

The version we are using is…. 4.1.3 build 2510

Please help us with this……this is nutz and we have no clue how to correct the issue on our own.  I swore up and down that you were the best wordpress forum provider and I stand by that statement, help me prove it to these guys please.  I really appreciate it.

It's there now.

if you look at the source being generated it is easy to spot the problem. That last post (starting 'My Current IP address is…' has, immediately after this start an html comment tag n it rendering the rest of the post as comment and not to be dislayed. At the samr time it is full of formatting and html tags that someone has pasted in place, clearly lifted from another source which is screwing with the underlying formatting.

You are going to have to edit that post manually. remove the html comment tag and remove all the crap embedded in it and then things should get back to normal.

Thank you so much.  For future reference, it would not allow me to "save edited post" once I made the changes.  I, instead, had to completely delete the post.  I have the post saved for my records, however, I decided to remove the post entirely and have the original poster repost it after copying his comments onto notepad first.

How do I prevent this from happening in the future?

And once again, thank you so much for your assistance.

not sure what was posted as I didnt see… did the post include a lot of embedded formatting?  since html (limited) is allowed in posts, not much we can do to 'validate' the html…

if they are cutting and pasting from say word doc, make sure they use the paste as plain text or paste from word buttons in tinymce…

might also want to enable the strip pre tags option on forum – options – content settings.

On  the forum Components > Editor admin panel there is an option to reject pre-fortmatted post content. I have to say this is a long way from bulletproof as there are an infinite number of things that could be embedded in html tags and we can only check a few of the more common – notably from MS Word. It may help with the more blatant 'paste' content but it should also be noted it will only apply to the tinyMCE rich text editor.

The good news from your standpoint is that in our experience extreme embedded formattign such as you have had here doesn't happen that often. Whilst it is a nuisance mostly it just looks odd in the post. We improve this with every release and have made more improvements in the forthcoming 4.3.

Educating your users is also worth while however I realise that is not always as easy as it sounds!
