i mean… yeah, ok, i know it changes the time stamp, but…  why?

i was hoping that it'd pretend the post was made at that date, and thus "shuffle it into the deck" where the new timestamp said it should be.  i found that it did not :(

lol. it does seem like thats what it would do, but no.

It does change the timestamp, but unfortunately, posts are sorted by post_id. It yields a tremendous savings in mysql to do it that way. sorting by actual date is way slower and more processor intensive.

99.9% of the time, sorting by post_id gives the desired answer. except when you try to edit the timestamp and expect a resorting. to be honest, not sure why we even have a timestamp edit in there as it does confuse.

Laugh This has a vaguely humorous root actually. It goes back to the very early days of SPF when we didn't have that many users but one of them wrote the code for this and requested that I put it in the app for him. And in those days it didn't seem like a bad request.

He wanted it because he ran a busy forum but felt guilty about writing posts while he was at work. So he wanted the timestamp feature so he could write a post and then either back or forward timestamp it to show he wasn't working the forum in work time!

Like many of those early requests – before we needed to triage what users ask for – it just settled in to be a quirky part of the forum.

though this certainly opens the door for my oft-wished "money-paying" app :)

OK, guys, I give up. Where is the "edit timestamp" option hidden? I'm currently using version 4.1.0, and I think I've looked in all the obvious places.

Is there only one chance to edit a timestamp?? It won't let me edit it now.

Sorry no although I know we have an open ticket on this. it has previously been requested – if i recall correctly – just the once so it has a very low priority.
The original timestamp editing at topic creation time was actually contributed by a user who wanted to be able to respond to his forum while at work but stamp the time to show out of work hours… sneaky.
