Might be able work out a plugin or a hack at least. Where is this trigger? I'm having the same issue. But I'm on 2.9.2 still. I have it so guests can post at least. So I just have to approve them.

I've been adding them as a member manually via the database (scary). Since I'm getting an error when trying from the front end.

wp fires the action 'set_user_role' when the role of a user is updated… it passes in the user id of the user updated…

optionally, you can call sf_map_role_to_ug() of the user who's role was changed… the wp firing action has the effect of calling that routine…
