can't create smileys or avatars folders in blogs.dir

After installation of spf onto a subdomain blog on my MU site, spf configuration – storage locations indicates two missing files: forum-avatars and forum-smileys, which it indicates should exist in wp-content/blogs.dir/*/files/ directory.  However, for some reason, I can't seem to create or move such folders there.  I tried changing file permissions – all that I could – to no avail.  What is the problem?

your server permissions are likely such that spf cannot create them… you can go in via ftp or ssh and create them manually…

I changed everything I could find to 777 (which was overkill) and it still didn't work so I think its something else.

your original post says the directories cannot be created…  that means YOU have to create them… so I am a bit confused by your latest post… do the directories now exist??

The wp-content/blogs.dir/*/files/ directory exists but I could not create forum-avatars or forum-smileys folders in that directory.  I did initially create the folders directly under wp-content, like the directions say to do, and then populated them with the prescribed files.  But then based on the notations in the Configuration menu, I figured that creating those folders directly under wp-content was for a standard WP installation, not MU.  So I tried to move them to the blogs.dir/5/files menu.  That didn't work, so I tried to create them afresh, and that also didn't work.  I changed the permissions on everything along the chain of wp-content/blogs.dir/5/files.

All very strange. I am no expert on the way that permissions combine to allow some actioms and not others and I would have thought that if you can change the access flags then you should be able to create folders. I think you need to take this question to your hosting support.

From an SP point of view, it doesn't matter where – under wp-content – these folders get created as long as they are unique to your installation and the correct path is set in the forum configuration storage locations. So you could move them. But I suspect that getting to the bottom of the permissions problem would be more worthwhile.

still confused as to whats going on here…  yes, for multisite, you would put them under blogs.dir…  however you have them under 5, so assume you really want them on network site 5??? the main site would be 1…

you originally said you couldnt create or move folders… so is this really that? or creating files..

also, you referenced forum-avatars and forum-smileys… except at install, we wont try to create them… so if they werent created at install, you have to manually create them…

so I am still confused as to the problem based on your topic title and original post?  Are you having problems with the dirs or actually uploading avatars and smileys??

I'm having problems with dirs.  I'm assuming if I could create the dirs (folders), I could populate them.   The spf configuration/storage location window indicated that it was looking for the folders in wp-content/blogs.dir/5/files.  I assume that's because thats the location of the folders for the MU subdomain blog where I'm activating the spf plugin.  I tried to create them there and thats when I ran into the problems.

this is whats confusing me…  you have to create them from ftp, ssh or other – not from within wp/spf…  have you done that?

Yes, from ftp and plesk.  Won't work.  Get the following:

Set permissions of '/httpdocs/wp-content/blogs.dir/5' to '777'

Command:    SITE CHMOD 777 5

Response:    550 CHMOD 777 5: Operation not permitted

I researched on wp forums and found some info but no solution yet.  It has something to do with ownership of the blogs.dir being apache, rather than me.  All other directories show me as owner. Any ideas?
