how 'deep' is the buddypress/simplepress integration?

wpmu 2.9.1.1 and bp 1.2 is the system.

When I create a new group in buddypress, I am given the option of creating a bbpress forum for the group that I just created.

I'm curious if it's possible to have a simplepress forum created for the group instead of bbpress. If so, is it an automated process? Meaning someone clicks create group and selects a forum to be created as well. Does the simplepress auto install a new forum for the group in place of bbpress? (or even better, an option to choose bbpress or simplepress?)

I can see how some of my groups would 'require' a more powerful forum like simplepress, while other groups would barely even need bbpress.

If this is how everything works now, I am curious if an entirely new simplepress forum is created for each group, or if they are simply given their own sub-forum.

Also, what 'permission' schema are the users who created the group/simplepress forum given? (can I tie it into the members plugin for wp? so they are more moderators of their forum than admins..)

finally: If someone registers through buddypress/mu are they auto registered and logged into simplepress?

thanks for any info provided

no the integration isnt that deep… we work with wpmu and can play nice with bp… spf was designed from the ground up to be compatible with wp… through some work, we have made it compatible with wpmu… bp is not wpmu but a plugin for it… so still work to get done getting plugins talking together…

but bp doesnt know anything about spf… so it doesnt create a forum per user group (sounds odd btw)

if you log into wpmu/bp, yes you are logged into spf… we dont have a separate user db or login system… we piggy back on wp (and thus wpmu)…

we have plans to further integrate the two provided bp has the built in functionality to support hooks/actions/filters like wp… but frankly, with the big merge of wp and wpmu occurring now and due out in March, we will be letting that dust settle before we press with that…

I run several WPMU+BP sites and would recomend manual creation of BPgroup operated SPF forums/subforums, only upon user request.

You might also check for third party tools that will further increase the BP Group and SPF forum/sub-forum interaction. I use 'BP external Blogs' which will simply read the forum/subforum RSS and place new posts into the specified BP group activity stream.

Hi there,

I am currently exploring the opportunitites with buddypress for our community at ps3community.ch.

The idea is absolutly awesome! Combining our magazin approach with our 1000-member-strong community and putting this "facebook" umbrella on top. wow! mind blowing!

BUT… I am also very comitted to SPF… is there somehow a way to combine this?

we have a lot of users using both. but to be honest, we havent spent much time fully integrating the two… so I dont really know the full extent of the integration…

you can make spf avatars show up in buddypress… some users are reporting issues with making buddypress avatars work in spf (never tried that)… in fact, we only recently installed bp for the first time…

but, with the wp and wpmu merge in wp 3.0 and buddypress now supporting standard wp, its something we are going to be working on in the future.

The combination of SPF and Buddypress on an existing site is actually quite strait forward.

Install the buddypress plugin on your existing blog (wp or wpmu, version 2.9 MINIMUM required)

Select the options in buddypress you wish to use (buddypress and SPF have duplicate features. Private messages, Forums, Extended Profiles, Friends Lists, are found in both.)

Hint: BuddyPress provides an 'Activity Stream' (think Twitter/FaceBook) that SPF does not provide, But it does not provide Forums for users to discuss topics, you are required to find your own solution for this option.

BuddyPress also requires special Themes or the inclusion and specific modification of up to 50 different theme files to complete integration, where as, SPF provides an easy to use and fully integrated Forums system which will work with almost ANY theme, out of the box, or with the addition/modification of a single template file.

I'm NOT saying DON'T integrate the two, just understand the depth of the project you intend to undertake.

The most dificult part is going to be adjusting your theme to work with buddypress… fortunately there is a buddypress plugin designed specifically for this purpose, available from the buddypress developers (hosted on wordpress.org)

An SPF add-on (not plugin) is in the works for adding SPF posts into a buddypress activity stream, and also listing username mentions in posts as part of BuddyPress users '@Mentions' stream, but please be patient… I code with a brick… and Buddypress' public code documentation is notoriously LACKING useable content.

Hi Radio, thank you for your feedback.

I am totally with you… budypress implementation is way to messy and actually duplicates the SPF approach.

Maybe going forward, it would be worthwhile to think about how SPF can be integrated more with WP than just beeing a forum. Post- and comment linking functionallity is the right direction. There is way more to explore with SPF. The only problem is, that e.g. the pluggable functionallity is great but for a non-pro coder an absolut secret how to integrate that.

I have a lot of great ideas but sadly limitted knowlede when it comes to coding.

I am currently have building a community backend to a WP membership site which uses Wishlistmember. Feeding off the wordpress database is crucial for me, as it controls access to the members area which I have integrated to SPF with Rolemanager plugin.

"Select the options in buddypress you wish to use (buddypress and SPF
have duplicate features. Private messages, Forums, Extended Profiles,
Friends Lists, are found in both.)"

If I chose to go down this route, what specifically would I turn on in each (SPF & BP) to allow optimal integration until SPF integration plugin comes along?

Also, can Simple:press be made to display threads in a page environment like the worpdress site? I could not find anything in the wiki, so I am assuming not, but thought I would ask.

thanks

Craig

Thanks for the Reply MrPapa, sorry for the delay in me answering. Looking more closely at this page, I guess I really meant "create a more minimalist look"  more like that page. I see by looking above in the URL bar that I can set the URL to match the thread title. I have successfully managed to tweak the css using firebug and inserting changes into my thesis custom.css file….just would like less of the lines and boxes around the outside and yet stay with the quick-on-the-ball updates that simple press offers over BBpress.

Some more guidance from -Radio- on how to approach what to turn on/off in each to make them play nice together would be most welcome.[I have a single install of WP]

Searched elsewhere but so far there are more questions than answers. I accept that the exciting times are a changin'Laugh
