not really sure what buddypress groups are… we have a very minimal integration with buddypress at the current time but have an open ticket to tighten up the integration a bit more in a future release… only so much two guys can do and neither one of us use buddypress…
is this related to buddypress activity streams? some one posted a piece of code for our program hooks to integrate into the activity streams…

The way buddy press is made is that the forums are part of the group (no general site wide forum). Open forums allow any one to read the forum content, but only group members can comment in that group.
Not sure why/who decided this was a great idea as I find most of my members have a hard time joining a group then writing the post. I've had to really architect the navigation because of this "design". To a point that now all new members are automagically added to all groups (aka forums).
I'm looking for a way to import buddypress forums (which are bbpress based) into spf. Still hunting the support forums down but if you know please email me at gfetorro on gmail.com

There us currently someone writing an importer from various other forums including, I believe, bbPress. Should be coming along quite soon I understand. When they have it ready for first tests we will publish a blog post to invite people to try it
