I was running SPF V4.2.2 on a VPS server when that server crashed and all files were lost (I did have a backup of the database). I installed WordPress (3.0.1) on a new server with the same domain name.  I then imported into this WP application’s database the MySQL database backup from the original WP application via phpMyAdmin.

All of the WP data was successfully imported without a problem.

However none of the Simple Press information was imported. There were no SPF settings, posts, users, categories, etc.

Any help getting SPF to recognize or import the database information is appreciated.

Does the backup database file include the SP tables? Take a look – all of them start with 'sf' (following the wp prefix of course).

you say none of the information was imported, but then you say the backup contains sp tables… confusing…  are the tables empty?

are you saying the new db has sp tables or not? is there data in them?

Yes it looks like the SP tables are empty. I checked the backup database I used to restore WP and it looks like the SP info was missing from that backup.

I did find another database backup which includes the forum details.

What would be the process for getting the SP data included from the "good backup"? Do I reimport this entire database into the blog?

so all the domain details are the same?  if so, you could just try reimporting the sp tables into your new db and see what happens…  you might have a few minor issues with users that were created since the backup and blog linking (if used) might not be accurate…

if you reimported the entire db, you blog would revert back to the date of the backup…  dont know if thats sufficient for you or not…

I have backup databases I have imported to try to restore the forum but the SP tables seem to be empty.

Is there any reason why the forum details would be empty/missing from the backups? I have daily or weekly backups going back a few months and restoring the forum from any of these would be acceptable?

I guess it might depend on what you used to make the backups. I have seen some plugins that strictly only backup the WP core tables and miss everything else. Could that be it?

Perhaps that could be the problem; however I did find a backup that saved the individual tables in separate mysql files (see below). I have no idea how to import/integrate these files in the main WordPress database. I tried importing some of the individual mysql "sf" files via the PHPMyAdmin but received error messages. Any help would be appreciated.

Well clearly those files have something in them even if they are on the small size – so not much data.

I can not comment on the error messages without knowing what they are but there are several possible reasons…

  1. If the backup .sql file does not include the instructions to CREATE the table and the table does not exist on the target database – error?
  2. if the backup .sql file is not set up to insert the data where the target table DOES ecist – error?
  3. If the tables DO exist in the target DB but have either added or missing columns so that the taget and source tables do not match – error?

There are more conditions but these are probably the main ones.

3 can happen if the SP versions are different (i.e., if your backup files are SP 4.2 and the target tables are SP 4.3. If we have made database changes netween those versions then you have a mis-match. It is important – both with SP and indeed WP to restore to the same version of the software.
