New Posts Indicator, iPod Functionality

Hello there, I'm here from the MidLife Gamer Forums to ask a couple of questions.

Firstly, the new posts indicators at the top level of a forum. I'm talking about the small red indicator (small-post.png) that appears when there have been new posts in the forum since your last visit. On our forum, it seems that these indicators appear when there's a new post, and then persist until your cookies reset or something. It would be much better if they functioned like the new posts indicators at subforum level — Shows a red indicator until you've looked at a thread, then stops it. Is this just a problem with our implementation of the forum or does it behave this way for everyone?

It seems to drive away users since they can't tell when there are new posts, they look in a subforum with one of these indicators, it shows no new posts and they assume it's the same for the rest.

Also, we've had a lot of complaints from users that some aspects of the forum don't work when accessed by mobile browsers, like the iPod Touch/iPhone and Blackberry. Things like being able to get up to posting a reply, but then being completely unable to enter text in the field. Has there been any success elsewhere? Is there some kind of recommended plugin to use?

Thanks for your time!

New Posts Flag: You know – I would just turn it off. I was very close to removing this altogether until we can make it more 'sensitive' but it was decided to leave it in because users can turn it off. This one is a guide – it get's removed when a user logs out or their session times out. It will get reworked as soon as I have the time away from this support forum to start the coding. There are other ways a user can discover new posts – particularly the Quicklinks drop down – so if this confuses your users – I suggest turning it off.

As to mobile use – we do not have support built in for that yet. Again this was something I really would have liked to do for 4.3 (which will be released to support WP 3.0) but again am struggling with time to spend on it.

yes, tinymce has been a problem on mobile browsers. I have found that if when on your mobile browser (android or blackberry in my case), if I switch in my profile to a standard textarea for my editor, everything pretty much works as expected…

as andy says, we do plan to add in mobile support…

Would it be possible for you to let forum admins select which editors to allow, then? I'd prefer if users were only allowed to choose between TinyMCE and Plain Text. An idea for a future version, maybe. An option when replying to use a plain text box would be grand, too. It's gonna be a bit irritating for people to have to keep editing their profiles when they want to use their mobile browsers.

Would not supporting mobile use properly be more appropriate?

you can either fix it at one editor, or allow them to choose from the four.  might be possible some time in the future to make the it be some combination…
