I'm trying to create a group in my forums that will be restricted to most users and guests, and only allow specific users to be able to view and add posts in this forum group.

I understand that I will have to assign the selected users to a special user group and set the forum group's permissions to only allow that specific user group.

However, I'm wondering if this group of forums (and the titles and latest post notifications) will be visible on the main page even for members and guests restricted from this forum group. If ithe default setting is to allow it to be viewable, is there any way to override this setting so that the forum group will be practically nonexistent for restricted members and users?

Thanks in advance Cool

thats your choice based on the permissions…  but yes, you can choose for no one but allowed members to even see the forums…  to make this happen auto for newly created forums in that group, set the default permissions…

Thanks for the prompt reply, Mr. Papa.

Will members with access be able to see new posts in the latest posts areas? And how about in the latest posts sidebar widget, will guests and restricted members be able to view the latest post topics?

Basically, like I said earlier, I want it to be nonexistent – except for those allowed access.

Thanks!!

I assume the same also applies to search engine spiders. I don't want the restricted areas to be crawled and indexed.

Interesting you mention the RSS feeds, I wonder how that works. If I was following it on Google Reader how does it know if I have access to the feed? Does it check to see if there's a cookie in my browser when Reader tries to pull the data?

no, we use feedkeys…  you add an query arg to the url of the feed with your feedkey (user unique with 128 bit key)…  the plugin validates your feedkey and renders the content…
