I'm using WP 3.0 and SP 4.3.2
I've installed Simple Press on a test blog and have been playing around with it. It's worked great so far, done everything that I wanted. I only had an admin account that I was using to check it out.
I created a regular account on the blog which is called a Subscriber and when I go the forum I get the "Access Denied" message. This new account is getting seen as a Guest to the forum. I know because when I updated Guest settings to "read-only" I was able to see the forum. I created a User Group called Subscribers and made sure it had Full Access and still access is denied.
When I view the user in the SPF admin the user has No Memberships but has the rank of Member. I didn't see any way to change these. When I viewed the users profile in the SP admin it says Forum Rank is Administrator and under User Group Memberships it lists Administrator, No User Group and Membership. I'm very confused by this.
How can I change existing blog subscribers access to the forum? I have an existing blog with over 1000 subscribers and I'll need them to immediately have access to the forum when it is installed.
Thank you.
Well now – did you set up your user groups and permission sets? And then did you go to Options > Members where you can associate the WP rroles to a user group so that they automatically get assigned when created?
I have user groups and permissions sets set up. I checked the Members section in Options and the default group for New Members is Members and the WP Subcriber Role is also set to Members. Yet I created another new subscriber and the Membership is coming back as 'No Memberships' and my existing subscriber still has 'No Memberships.'
I tried manually adding members to the Members usergroup. Both my test accounts were eligible to be moved yet when I click the 'Add Members' button it says "Member Add Failed!"
I forgot to mention I'm using Buddypress. I'm not sure if there's anything I need to do with Buddypress to make sure the two work together. However I deactivated Buddypress, as well as all the other plugins I had installed, and the problem still persists.
Which problem still persists after deactivating other plugins? That;s kind of important.
You are almost certainly failing to add members to a user group because they are marked as admins. You have already said that they were all being created as admins so this makes sense. Deactivating other plugins will not change that.
But did you try creating a new user with the plugins deactivated? That really is the key.
SP creates the data it requires and places new members in to their correct user group when WordPress fires the necessary actions. If users are created by another pkugin then it is important that that plugin also fires the proper actions – in other words behaves as if it were WP doing it. if that doesn't happen then SP is unable to perform the necessary tasks correctly.
Alright I deactivated Buddypress, created a new user and that user has correctly been created as a forum member and has full access to the forum.
However what can I do about the other 2 accounts that were somehow created as Admins (not sure how that happened as they were created in the WP admin as subscribers, not admins) and have no forum membership? Is there anyway to give these accounts forum memberships?
Don't confuse WP Administrators with SP Admins. They are not the same thing although, of course, one person can be both.
Out of interest, what happens if you go to Admin > Forum > Admins > Manage Admins? Are those two listed? Do they have any capabilities? If so remove tjose capabilities and they will cease to be admins.
There's only one Admin accounted listed in Admin > Forum > Admins > Manage Admins and it's not either of the test accounts.

OfflineCan you take a look in the database? Find the rows for these people in the sfmembers table and make sure the 'admin' column is set to zero.
Or – another way may be to actually make them admins – grant them a capability and then go back and take it away from them again as this should also reset that flag.
