Hey guys,

I just noticed that my members and I am no longer able to edit a forum post after we publish it. Here's a quick 42 second screen capture.

My forum is behind a pay wall so I can provide you with access if needed.

Thanks!

First up, assuming you have a status bar at the bottom of your browser page, can you tell me what the url is when you hover over an edit button?  Actually it should be a javascript command...

And - do you know how to use the web/script console built into your browser to look for script conflicts because that is the most probable culprit? If you do can open it up and click on the edit button and see if any script errors are reported?

Thanks for the quick reply.

The hover URL is javascript:document.usereditpost4844.submit();

I'm not sure about the second part of your message, but here's what I see when I inspect the "Edit" button in Google Chrome.

I will private message you with admin access in case it helps.

Thank you!

when you inspect there, see the tab all the way at right?  the one labeled Console?   Andy was asking what is shown in that tab...  might show some js errors...

I am seeing quite a lot of script errors actually.

Can you by any chance make the account you set up for us either an SP Admin or Moderator? As an ordinary user I am not allowed to edit a post anyway so am unable to click on edit and see what shows up.

Sure thing.

I just made your account an SP Admin with full admin capabilities.

Thanks for the help!

I am worried by a the script errors but am not sure if any of those are actually related to the issue.

I think the first task has to be to bring your Simple:Press up to date. You have updated WordPress to 4.1 and you need Simple:Press 5.5.3 to properly support that and you are stuck on 5.4.2 which is now pretty old.

I don't see the update option in the WP Update list which is a surprise but you can do it from the WP plugins listing. After that update any SP plugins that need to be done as well.

And then we can see where we are.

And don't forget the usual appeal to make a DB backup before you start - just in case!

I tried updating to 5.5.3 two weeks ago, received a Simple Press error message, and had to revert back to 5.4.2.

I will give the update another try and if I run into the same error I will let you know exactly what is says.

Do you know if the script errors you are encountering are all simple press related, or due to other plugins I have running on the site?

Best,

Ryan

Oh gosh... that was nearly a week ago! As far as I recall there were no specific SP errors that I saw. The problem with javascript errors however is that sometimes the cause of an error is often not identified until the next script crashes so it can be easy to pinpoint the wrong script when trying to diagnose an issue.

A very large number of people run our updates script and on the whole a very, very small number of users have a problem with it.

The two most common issues are (a) some sort of security/authentication plugin that needs to be turned off while the update is made and (b) a script that runs on the back of our Ajax calls which has been seen a few times. This then returns data that we don't recognise as ours and therefore we stop the upgrade accordingly.

After that some conflicts may happen but usually such conflicts will also show up in the normal page loading or event processing...

When we can't isolate a problem we usually ask the user to deactivate a few WP plugins and that usually allows things to happen properly!

Thanks! I appreciate the insight.

This time I was able to update Simple Press and all of my SP plugins and themes.

However, I still cannot edit a post.

Any ideas?
