Issue installing Simple:Press plugin

Hi all,

Let me start by saying I have installed the plugin successfully in the past.

I uninstalled the plugin using the correct procedure because the forum was having problems in Internet Explorer 8 (I didn't know if there were compatability issues) so I thought I would try uninstalling/re installing as it isn't being actively used yet.

I'm running Wordpress 4.0 and have just today downloaded the latest plugin from the website (3 times in case it was a corrupt download)

The plugin installs without error, then when I click to Activate the plugin I get the error message The plugin does not have a valid header. I can click back and go to the plugin page and activate it from there without that error appearing.

After activation however, I see the message "Simple:Press is READY TO BE REMOVED. When you deactivate it ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED". I have deactivated and re-installed the plugin several times and the get the same result each time. When I go to the forum section the only option shown is Admins with an error 'Either the theme CSS file and/or color Overlay file from the selected theme is missing.

Can someone please advise as I want to continue to use this marvelous plugin!

I don't have direct access to the database, although I do have FTP access to the site.

Is it simply a case of some missing files in the latest download?

Thanks in advance,

David

Hey David,

What version of SP were you running before? or roughly how old? Similar issues in the past have been due to permission issues on folders... Specifically on the wp-content folder.

Can you start by checking to see if the installer has created a folder called sp-resources inside wp-content, and if so, what's inside?

No, the download archive is complete...  we have many thousands of installs on it...

that message seems to indicate at one point you wanted to uninstall simple press but never actually did it... remember, there is an uninstall page for simple press... simply deactivating or removing the plugin files is not uninstalling...

The uninstall page is forum - toolbox - uninstall...  is the uninstall option checked there?  make sure its unchecked and then save the page...

when you got the invalid header, how did you get the plugin there?  via ftp or the plugin uploader page?

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

The previous version of SP was 5.5.0.1 (i think, it was definitely a very recent one). I've checked the permissions on the wp-content folder and they seems to be correct (755).

The installer hasn't created a folder called sp-resources in the wp-content folder. It has created the simple-press folder in the wp-content/plugins folder and within that there is admin, forum,resources,sp-api, sp-startup, licesnce.txt & sp-control.php.

I did want to uninstall it, to see if reinstalling it resolved my issue with IE8. I went to that option and select both options for uninstall (uninstall and remove locations) before deactivating and deleting the plugin. Now when I go to the admin pane the only option I get is Admins - Your Admin Options and the only option down the left hand navigation is Admins whereas before there was settings/forums/groups/plugins/themes etc...

In regards to the invalid header. It installs fine but that appears when trying to activate it immediately after install. This error occurred both after I installed it directly from the WP admin panel (Add New Plugin) or unzipped the folder and FTP'd it to the plugins folder.

Hoping you can help,

Thanks,
David.

Seeing only admin options in the admin panel would suggest you are looking at the wp-admin page as maybe a WP admin but not SP admin.

It's odd.

I've logged in as another administrative account and see the message - "Please note that while you are a WP admin, you are not currently an SP admin. By default, WP admins are not SP admins. Contact one of the SP Admins listed below to see if they want to grant you SP admin access on the SP manage admins panel - David" so my account is definitely a SP admin (I used the 'David' account to install SP).

When I look at the list or Core and Custom capabilities there seems to be nothing that relates to SP at all (using 'User Role Editor') to add to the account.

I've also tried installing SP with a different WP account to no avail.

This is what I see in the options.

I don't think what I am about to suggest will be of any help, but it's worth a go..

Looking at the message the first thing to check is the themes, can you have a look at

simple-press > wp-content > sp-resources > forum-thems

Just see what's there, I know sometimes when a theme is being used and is removed during use it can play havoc with the admin page..

Also, can you check your PHP error log to see if you are getting anything useful in there? You can delete everything in it, save it, then run the admin page. Look for errors only, not warnings.

At least worth a quick check even if I am on to nothing!

The sp-resources folder isn't there.

After uploading the SP plugin folder (unzipped) to the /wp-content/plugins/ folder and activating the plugin (I see the message Plugin Activated) I'm then not able to install it.

I think because I can't install it it's not creating the sp-resources folder?

I can see the simple-press folder in the /wp-content/plugins/ which has 755 permissions.

Even after performing the uninstall from the Admin panel initially and removing / re-adding the plugin several times whenever the plugin is activated it always has the message 'Simple:Press is READY TO BE REMOVED. When you deactivate it ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED' beneath it.

Not sure if this is of note but the URL to the small section of the admin panel I see is /wp-admin/admin.php?page=simple-press/admin/panel-admins/spa-admins.php

OK, so it seems like the plugin has been deleted, not un-installed, and upon adding the files back in to perform a re-install, something seems to be stuck and looking for files that are no longer there..

Well I know that some stuff is included in the zip files in sp-startup that can be added manually, but I don't think this will help in this instance.

Best thing to do I'm afraid is wait for Mr Papa who will hopefully be able to shed some light on this situation.

I'll wait - thanks for trying to help, at least we've ruled a few things out!

I hope I can get it working again as it was ideal. I only tried to re-install it as it wasn't rendering correctly in Internet Explorer 8. The forums were showing but the box where you enter the text for the post was greyed out...
