Hi,

Is there a way to include posts from a particular author/member in the forum search results when searching on the member's name - like "John Smith" or just "Smith"?

Thanks,
David

sorry, not sure I follow...  are you doing a member search (on the members list) or a keyword search in the forum?  for the former, you only want to include specific authors? for the latter, you want a button for posts by that author?

just trying to understand...  the latter already exists...

Thanks, Mr Papa.

It is a keyword search we want.

We'd like to be able to type a person's name into the regular forum search field and have the resulting list include all posts by that person, as well as any that mention his or her name. So if I wanted to see everything you wrote, I'd search on "Mr Papa" with the advanced option of "Match all words."

We don't want to use the button that lists members - it isn't included in our custom theme.

Thanks,
David

Currently just the two search options on a users profile which does not, of course - include mentions of a user name in the post content. Simply threads they have started or have posted to...

What you are asking for would be possible but would need a lot of rejigging of the current advanced search form.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm just the web guy for this site so I'm not sure which way this will go.

I'm checking with the owner to see whether they'd like to resurrect the members button.

If not, are there any available functions, or filters, or perhaps documentation you can think of that would help me with rejigging the advanced form?

Thanks
David

You do not need the members button/list

If you are allowing to show a users profile then the search options are on that profile popup.

Yes, but we're also suppressing that on this forum.

Anyway, even if we weren't, using the profile, people would first have to find a post by that member, which may not always be an easy thing to do. And they would have to do another search to find posts where that member is mentioned (where he/she is not the poster).

If I have it right, using the standard options, to get all posts mentioning, or by a member, would require three (maybe two) processes:

  1. Keyword search for member's name,
  2. Go to the member's profile and click the button for posts started by the member, and then
  3. Click on the button for posts they contributed to.

We are looking to have a one step process. Type name and adjust advanced options, click search, get results.

Thanks,
David

your 3 step process is how it would need to be done currently...

the simple press core api would certainly support your single step process (enter name, use advance options to select user, click search) and could fairly easily be made into an sp plugin...  of course, could be similarly added to core, but its not there today...

I can open a ticket for future consideration (first request for such)... or if its critical now, we could probably give you a quote for developing the plugin (see our sidebar)...
