well looks like this is going to be a ongoing issue with wp-engine, got their response back on the tables

If our platform is changing these particular tables back to InnoDB, then converting them to MyISAM would not be permanent, but you should have plenty of time to handle what you need in that time.

I noticed this morning that they were back to InnoDB and the index I made was gone, not sure if their system did it or the wordpress update last night did it. I sent them a e-mail asking for clarification. Does anyone else here host on wp-engine and have run into this? I see wp-engine is a sponsor here.

I can say with 100% certainty that the WordPress automatic update will not change the type of this table. So this is surely something wp-engine must be doing.

As far as I am aware we haver several users who are hosted there - at least I know they have come up for discussion before. And there have been no actual other reports like yours. My only impression of them - and it's just an impression based on the few comments that have come my way - is that they tend to be rigid and a little dictatorial on what they will and will not let you do as a customer. Perhaps this ties in with this experience. But - at the same time - yes others use them who also run Simple:Press. And as you point lout  they placed an ad on our site which does suggest they are happy to host SP!

I really would like to resolve this and - as I said before - there is a ticket open to have this looked at in more detail but it will be after the current release which must coincide with the release of WP 3.9 which has gone into RC1 today - so probably not very long now.

no worries, I'll beat them at their own game and change the table every morning when I wake up if I have to, I did a search and saw another member here hosted on there, so I checked their forums and tried their search function and got the same database query issue, so it looks like it wasn't just my install

question yellow, what does the index do? Does it store previous searches? I noticed when testing that a initial search might yield 2 results, if I search again it yields 15

Do you mean the FULLTEXT index? it indexes all of the words that are used in posts. Well not all - it has a list it ignores like 'and', 'but etc. But that is why it can make word searches much faster as they are indexed.

Unless new posts have been made the search results should be the same for the same search term. But results might depend on the advanced settings so were these the same both times?

yes, the full text index,

I did the searches one after the other, the only difference being I had just enabled a custom theme and the share this plugin, I modified the theme to remove the footer info, added the embed code you emailed me  and removed the share this icons on each post

none of those would affect the search results...  andy was asking about the advanced search options (see link under search box)...

were you on the same forum page as first search when you made the second search?  and was it right after?  or had you visited some a search result?

asking about the advanced search options because by default, if you are in a forum, it only searches that forum...  you can change it on the advanced search page or update the template function to change the default...

actually, that might have been it, I didn't think to make sure it was checked for all forums

well heard back on my question from yesterday

Unfortunately, I am not sure how frequently this process runs, but from what I've seen, it's about daily. I've run some administrative scripts on our end to see if any of them trigger it. If the particular tables you had changed have not been reverted back after this or after at least a few days to be on the safe side, then it's likely that they are not tables that we force to InnoDB, so they probably can stay set as MyISAM long term.

I checked this morning and sure enough they were reset back to InnoDB, so I guess I will just have to reset the table every morning.

My other option which I'm not sure is even doable, is there any way to modify the search function so it only searches topics not posts? sftopics is set for MyISAM and the search function works fine when you choose only topics, it's just when the posts are involved that it causes a database error and produces no results, that way at least some results will be given if they don't utilize the advances search options
