I just want the topic title to show up in the search results, with the slug of content relavant to what they searched for showing below that.

ah just noticed you are on a very old version (assuming you posted in correct forum)… search engines will have to self discover, which most do, after coming to the main forum page… if you are using an seo plugin that does canoncial urls, you need a newer version or else they will all point to the forum page.

In 4.2, we added direct support for the google xml sitemap plugin where all forum pages are auto added to the that sitemap for search engines…
