Hey,

Is there an option not to shorten the url?

Even when if I un-link the URL, it still shortens it!Confused

no, afraid not… any url over 50 characters will get shortened…

I can open a ticket for future consideration to make that number user definable…

Well, actually It is a great feature and I really like it Smile

But this one time I didn't want to shorten it… I guess I will have to do something like

h ttp://blaabla.com/ so It won't convert it to an URL.

hmm it converted it anyway :S

Hi,

is there a way to hack the code so that the URL doesn't get shortened? We will be using the theme in a WordPress support environment, and as you know, many url's will be long.

So if, for example, I wish to explain that an image is located in http://www.yoursite.com/wp-con…..gename.jpg I would not want that shortened.

thanks in advance,

cnx

Well as it said above – no – but a tciket was raised at that time to allow for it. I will ensure it get's into 4.2 as an option.

But – there is a very good reason why it is not a good idea. If a really, really long link is in the post and it is wider than the display width then it will widen the area to fit as it has no spaces in it. This will mess up the display. We have been searching high and low for a dynamic way to wrap such lines but so far without success. (If you know of a good way please do let us know as it is a big nuisance).

Plus, the bottom line is that links should really be entered properly, using a proper 'a' tag and descriptive text. A link should BE a link… then it matters not how long it is. URL's really should not be just pasted in if you are to do things properly. Ok – off my soap box now.

Hi,

thanks for your prompt answer, and I hear what you're saying. Unfortunately, a URL is not always intended to be a link, as I tried to explain. It can be a location of a certain file that needs to be edited, deleted or whatever.

Or it can be part of some html or php code that, embedded in the code tags, still gets shortened, which can create undesirable results.

I'll start hacking away in TinyMCE and let you know. And, since you're buliding this into 4.2 can give me rough directions where to look.

thanks

Oh it is nothing whatseoever to do with tinyMCE. if you want to stop this just open the file

/simple-forum/sf-hooks.php

Find the line:

add_filter('sf_save_post_content', 'sf_package_links', 10);

and comment it out.

The shortening in code tags is an issue we have open  at the moment so I agree with that one. The 'location of a file for deletion or editing' should not be repreented as an http url but a path.

great thanks! I'll have a go at that, and/or see what I can do to improve.

and I agree, path or url … but (I keep stretching this, I'm sorry, and these are all examples) as a moderator myself, helping others with their WordPress sites, themes and plugins, I also may want to tell people that such and such is the background image they should modify.

It's just ever so easy to just right-click on the page, and View image/View background image,  or using Firebug and copy/paste that in a post. Especially if you do so dozens times a day. With a URL, so they can a) see what it is, and b) locate it in their folder structure.

But I understand the issue, and your point, so I'm not arguing ;-) thanks a bunch for your help, we will be launching large scale soon.

Now an option in 4.2

Would be interested to know a little more about your project?
