Your "PlainText area" suggestion the other day seems to have done the trick for now. Thanks for the suggestion.
As for your request, I don't quite know what to tell you. We are using a variety of plug-ins, including your simple-forum plug-in, wp touch (to re-skin site contents to be more accessible on smartphones), contact form 7, and more.
We're using WordPress version 2.9.2
Leaving aside proper and full support in the future I was simply wondering that at the very least we should be able to detect a mobile browser making the request and deliver the plain text editor for mobiles and whatever the editor setting is the rest of the time.
So I am looking for a decent list of mobile ua's. Most seem pretty out of date.
You would think with the iPad just realised there'd be more up to date stuff? Or does this issue not apply to the iPad?
the ipad doesnt support flash, so dont assume its up to date… though we havent heard from any ipad users…
As far as I am aware the ipad runs the same OS as the iphone so that also means the same javascript engine.
Indeed, it's a slightly updated version of iPhone OS 3, but to all intents and puposes the same. It won't work on the iPad.

We've been playing with this on a pair of iPads (we're releasing an iPad native version of 100 Rogues in another couple of weeks).
Anyways, things are a bit differnt for the iPad than they are on a PC screen or an iPhone iPod Touch screen.
The iPad delivers the view of the computer screen (as opposed to the smartphone skin we use for the site ( http://www.100rogues.com ) You can tell because our mobile version has been told not to dliver the righthand sidebar, and it appears on the iPad.
The next interesting thing is that we still can't get a keyboard to come up on the iPad screen,if we set "Rich text editor". BUT, we can get a text BOX to appear, giving the option to copy or paste text. Very strange.
If we instead select "Plaintext" in the Personal "Profile" area as you suggested as a workaround for iPhones, we can interact with the iPad just fine.
Hope this helps.

version 4.3 will auto detect mobile or touch browsers and force the plain textarea so no user interaction will be required… not complete mobile support, but will be a start… of course, the user agents that this will occur for will be under admin control…
the forum itself will have NO control over the sidebar showing… that will be your mobile support stuff not working properly… it will need to detect an ipad as mobile and act accordingly…

Hey, this sounds like a terrific start.
The sidebar has nothing to do witht he text entry problem. I was just using that as a visual cue as to which version of the webpage was loading on the iPad. Our mibile device "skin" prohibits the appearance of the sidebar.
Thanks for the help!
George
