I am not sure you want to do what you have there… the purpose of new user group membership attained is to move users into a new user group upon reaching a forum rank… I wonder if you are confusing ranks and user groups… naming them the same will lend itself to this confusion…
how many user groups do you have? looks like two: new members and members…
what usergroup are new users put into when they are created or registered (forum – options – members)… when a user reaches 2 posts they will get membership in 'New Members' plus any existing memberships (v4.1 will offer an option to limit membership to one user group)… when the user reaches 200 posts they will get membership in 'Members'… So, I guess you are keeping folks in New Members user group with limited access until they have 200 posts? at which time you want them moved to Members usergroup with less restrictive permissions? The Big Member user group attained is not needed their since they appear to already be in Members…
Every time a user makes a post a check is made to see if they should be in the user group attained… if they are not in there, they gain membership… so you need to make sure you arent moving them around in usergroups manually or else it will be doing what you say its doing… does that make sense?

A. Yes 2 – new member and member
what usergroup are new users put into when they are created or registered (forum – options – members)…
A. They are new member when they register
when a user reaches 2 posts they will get membership in 'New Members' plus any existing memberships
A. No my intention was for them to be in new member until they have 2 posts, So I have them start in as new member both for rights and number of posts, at 3rd post their status changes to member, will the "user group membership attained" based on my settings automatically move them into member group with higher rights or does it only control what is displayed.

A. they are new member rights for 1st 2 posts, at third post they move to member with expanded rights, the big member keeps same rights only changes status when seen on board.

A. I only moved them manually – out of new member – after they stated showing up in the new member group by themselves.. that is the part I do not understand.. why they are appearing there with out being manually moved? I understand (I think) why some on the members moved to new member.. because they did not have any posts so the system moved them – but it did not move them it put them in both groups.
I still do not understand why the system is moving registers users with 40+ posts into the new member status.
Should I manually move the people who were in the member group with no posts into the group they belong – new member?
Or should I wipe out users groups and start over.
If it would help I can give you access to my forum admin.
Thanks for taking the time to help me straighten this out.
then, first, remove the auto usergroup for New Members and Big Members… its redundant and not needed and will waste cpu cylces checking… neither of those two will move them to any new user group… just put it back to No User Group Membership… I would also add a couple of zerors to the Big Member post count to make sure someone doesnt exceed it…
also, I want to be sure here, cause you are quoting forum ranks in places and not user groups… they are distinct and different… Are they New Members when they register (you said new member)? There is an actual option on the forum – options – members tab… The out of the box default is Members, so want to be sure here… it sure sounds like this is still the case…
So, folks with 40+ posts are getting moved into New Members user group when they make a post? And they are in Members already? And you manually removed them from New Members? because when they are promoted to Members, they dont lose their New Members membership – they wont be removed from that user group… Now if you manually removed them from New Members, then I would expect the forum rank stuff to not put them back in… but its possible there is a bug there…
It certainly wont hurt anything if that happens unless the new membership gained is actually more restrictive than the previous (would be odd for that to be the case) because the just get the dominant permission from multiple memberships…
Please verify the sequence above and if thats the case, then I can open a ticket for investigation…

OK – I understand – Done…

It is set to make a new person who registers "new member" with limited rights not a member with full rights

It is putting users with 40+ posts in the "New Member" group – I even manually took them out and the next day they were back in..
It certainly wont hurt anything if that happens unless the new membership gained is actually more restrictive than the previous (would be odd for that to be the case) because the just get the dominant permission from multiple memberships…
You are right it is not affecting the user rights.. the higher rights hold for the user but it seem to want to keep them in the lower rights group even after I manually removed them.
Please verify the sequence above and if thats the case, then I can open a ticket for investigation…
Maybe the redundent setting I had where the new user was put in "New Member" and the autouser group setting also for new members was causing a conflict – I will test it with the new settings for a few days and report back.
Thanks!!
Neto
I opened a ticket to make sure the auto assignment stuff only checks the current rank and not previously earned ones…
Mr Papa
I wanted to give you an update on this probem.. I followed your suggested changes.. since then all is working with no problems.
