Important Note:  The contents of this document applies ONLY to version 5.x.x of Simple:Press.  It likely does NOT apply to version 6.x.x (our latest version).

Plugin Description

Plugin: Google XML Sitemap Integration – This Simple:Press plugin allows creation of a Sitemap containing the forums and their posts accessible by web search engines. It requires the use one of the following WordPress plugins:

  • Google XML Sitemaps by Arne Brachhold
  • WordPress SEO by Yoast by Joost de Valk
  • All in One SEO Pack by Michael Torbert

Plugin Features

Note: It is recommended that the capabilities and settings of the associated WordPress plugin selected be well understood before downloading and installing the Simple:Press “Google XML Sitemap Integration” plugin. The associated WordPress plugin controls the parameters for the sitemap, its location, notifications to search engines, etc., not the Simple:Press plugin.

  • From the Dashboard’s WordPress Admin menu after download and installation of an associated WordPress plugin, select “Plugins” to view the “Plugins” panel with the installed WordPress plugins.
    • Review any links and information available for the associated WordPress plugin in the section for the associated plugin to understand its operation.
  • Review any available information for the associated WordPress plugin on the WordPress website.

Installing the Simple:Press “Google XML Sitemap Integration” plugin adds:

  • a new “Google XML Sitemap” section to the “Available Plugins – Install Simple:Press Plugins” panel under the forum Admin menu entry “Plugins” > “Available Plugins”. From this panel the “Google XML Sitemap Integration” plugin can be activated, deactivated, uninstalled, or deleted.

Activating this plugin provides:

  • a new checkbox “Include this forum in sitemap” in the “Extended Forum Options” section at the bottom of the “Forums – Manage Groups and Forums” panel for each forum seen by navigating the forum Admin menu entry Forums > Manage Groups And Forums, and clicking on “Edit Forum” on each of the forums displayed.
    • The default for each forum is a check mark in the box so each forum is being included in the sitemap.
    • The check mark may be removed in each individual forum’s setting so that the specific forum will NOT be included in the sitemap.

There are no options to be set up with this plugin.
There are no template tags associated with this plugin.
There are no new permissions added to the permission sets due to this plugin.

Plugin Requirements

An associated WordPress plugin that controls the use of the sitemap is required and must first be downloaded, installed, activated, and set up. The three (3) WordPress plugins to select from are:

  • Google XML Sitemaps by Arne Brachhold
  • WordPress SEO by Yoast by Joost de Valk
  • All in One SEO Pack by Michael Torbert

This Simple:Press plugin requires Simple:Press version 5.4 and above.

This plugin must be installed, and activated before it is operational.

As part of the installation, a “Google XML Sitemap” section is added to the “Available Plugins – Install Simple:Press Plugins” panel under the forum Admin menu Plugins > Available Plugins. From this panel the “Google XML Sitemap” plugin can be activated, deactivated, uninstalled, or deleted using its “Activate/Delete” and “Deactivate/Uninstall” selections.

  • The “Getting Started” link associated with the “Deactivate/Uninstall” selections should be selected to view the pertinent information regarding the plugin.

There are no new permissions added to the permission sets due to this plugin.

There are no template tags whose position on theme pages could be modified so creation of a Child or Custom Theme to receive the changes does not need to be recommended.

Installation and Activation

Please see Using Plugins on how to obtain and install this plugin.

The “Google XML Sitemap Integration” plugin is available from Our Plugin Library.

As mentioned there the default location for Simple:Press plugin folders is …/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins. If this path is changed, it is important to note that the plugin’s folder and its content need to reside in the forum plugins folder wherever it has been moved and however it has been renamed. See Storage Locations for more information.

Activation is accomplished from the Admin Dashboard panel menu at Forum > Plugins > Available Plugins from the drop down Forum Admin menu. On the “Available Plugins – Install Simple:Press Plugins” panel select the “Google XML Sitemap” plugin and click on “Activate”. The “Activate/Delete” label changes to “Deactivate/Uninstall” with a “Get Started” Link.

  • The “Getting Started” link associated with the “Deactivate/Uninstall” selections should be selected to view the pertinent information regarding the plugin.

To deactivate the plugin, click on “Deactivate”. The “Deactivate/Uninstall/Options” label changes to “Activate/Delete”.

Plugin Administrative Options

After activation, the only administrative control is whether to include or exclude a forum from the sitemap. Initial activation of the plugin results in all forums being included in the sitemap.

  • Excluding or Re-including a Forum in the Sitemap
    • From the forum Admin menu select Forums > Manage Groups And Forums to view the panel with a section for each group and forum on the website.
    • In the section for the forum to be either excluded or re-included in the sitemap, click on the forum’s “Edit Forum” button to view the “Forums – Manage Groups and Forums” panel.
    • Scroll down the “Forums – Manage Groups and Forums” panel to the “Extended Forum Options” section near the bottom of the panel.
    • In the “Extended Forum Options” section find the checkbox “Include this forum in sitemap”.
      • Exclude a forum from the sitemap by clicking on the checkbox containing a check mark. The check mark is removed from the checkbox indicating the forum will be excluded from the sitemap.
      • Re-include a forum into the sitemap by clicking on the checkbox not containing a check mark. The check mark is added to the checkbox indicating the forum will be added to the sitemap.
    • Click on the “Update Forum” button at the bottom of the panel to save the setting for the forum.
    • Repeat the steps for each forum to be either excluded or re-included in the sitemap.

Plugin Language Translation

A plugin’s message strings can be translated from English to other languages and then the translation displayed if language translation files are available. Some plugins may not have such files.

Information regarding downloading language files, “mo’ language file placement, and translation (language localization) is found at Localization.

More information is available regarding translation files at Simple:Press Translations. On the base page, select the “Getting Started Guide” link for basics about it’s use. On that page, select the “register a username here” link to obtain a password to the site. Use the “Contact Form” link to request the desired language if it is not currently available. The “Contact Form” link may also be used to volunteer to be a validator for a translation project.

The Google XML Sitemap Integration plugin’s available language translation files with translation statistics, and message translations can be viewed at Google XML Sitemap Integration Translations. Select the Version link to see the languages available. Select the link for the desired language to see forum messages and their available translations. If available, export the file for the selected language to its proper forum language sub-folder as a “mo” file using the export link at the bottom of the page displaying the actual message translations for the language selected.

The default location for plugin language files is …/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/sp-plugins. If this path is changed, it is important to note that the plugin’s language file needs to reside in the language sub-folder for sp plugins wherever it has been moved and however it has been renamed. See Storage Locations for more information.
