FAQ: What are the Simple:Press Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Features

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Wikipedia’s official definition is, “the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page.”

Webopedia’s definition is, “a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.”

There are a variety of definitions for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but they all involve getting a website closer to the top of the results list in search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo as well as making the text displayed for the website in the search results show a very strong correlation to the search criteria with the expectation that users will follow the link to the website.

The canonical URL for a site is the search engine friendly URL or address that one wants the search engines to treat as authoritative, the URL that the web owner wants visitors to see when the website is shown in a search results list.

Simple:Press has used the canonical tag and has redirected pages to one authoritative page for the forum to boost the SEO of forums.

  • Pretty/SEO Friendly Permalinks
  • Permalinks are the permanent URLs to individual postings. A permalink is what another user will use to link to a website or forum or a forum post. A ‘pretty’ permalink is one that is easier to read and understand.

An example of an ‘ugly’ permalink might be: www.mydomain.com/?page_id=12
An example of a ‘pretty’ permalink might be: www.mydomain.com/my-new-story/introduction

  • Custom Meta Tags Data (Descriptions and Keywords)
  • As a search engine prowls a site, it gathers information from the title, headings, content, and Meta Tags such as description or keywords. It compares the words within each of these sections and “ranks” the site dependent upon how well the information matches.

The word meta means information about. Meta Tags were created early on to provide concise information about a website. Meta tags list information about the web page, such as the author, keywords, description, type of document, copyright, and other core information.

With these options, one can control the setting of custom meta tags for description and keywords on forum pages.

    • To define a custom mega description, enter it in the text box.

    • The custom meta description entered can be chosen to be used on all the forum pages or just the group view forum pages.
    • One can choose to have the forum description used on forum pages and topic pages or have topic titles used on topic pages.
    • A custom list of meta keywords can be input and used on other forum pages.

  • Open Graph
  • Open Graph is Facebook’s new protocol which allows 3rd party websites and webapps to connect user activity on-site with user activity on Facebook. It is important to be sure when communicating with Facebook that the correct posts image size for post thumbnails is provided.

Note: The recommended size for featured images to appear on FaceBook is 200px x 200px.
    • One can choose to have Open Graph meta tags output for all forum views, that is for all views that are displayed using the Simple:Press ‘forum’ page.
    • One can choose to set the image meta tag for Forum and Topic views to the parent forum’s ‘Featured Image’ if one has been uploaded and specified (See both Create New and Edit Existing Forums).
      • If the forum does not have a ‘Featured Image’, the image meta tag will use the Forum’s WordPress Page featured image if one has been set.
      • If no image is set on the page then no image tag will be included.
    • For all other views, the image meta tag will use the Forum’s WordPress Page featured image if one has been set.
      • If no image is set on the page then no image tag will be included.

  • Topic Tags SEO Options (Tags Plugin)
