Simple:Press Documentation

Localization

Simple:Press version 5.0 has launched two new localization or language translation features. Firstly, with the advent of plugins and themes as well as user requests, the forum language files have been split into many smaller components. The forum core phrases have been split into ones for forum user viewed phrases (Front End), and ones for administration phrases (Admin). Each forum plugin has ones for its phrases, and each forum theme has ones for its phrases.

The second change is the launch of a community driven translation website for housing/reviewing/filling-in the Simple:Press translation files where all users can participate in text translation. This site uses the same application that WordPress now uses – GlotPress – and can be found at our new localization website.

Language Translation File Translation and Verification

Sign up to volunteer to be a translator or validator for a language translation project using the “Contact Form” discussed in “Simple:Press GlotPress Site Overview” below.

  • Translating is not hard (if the individual has the language skills of course) but it can be time consuming.
  • If for a desired language no translation file is available or contains untranslated phrases, then please do consider volunteering to help create and maintain one. It is the Simple:Press community who can make this work.
  • If you are willing to take on the task of verifying contributions, then please get in touch with us at Simple:Press so we can set the necessary permissions that will allow this.
  • Please remember that translated versions of Simple:Press core phrases, plugins and themes will always follow the release of any version of the Simple:Press components, but progress toward complete phrase translation can occur only if there are volunteers translating and verifying the language files a forum needs.

Language Translation Overview

Many of our users have been confused into believing that the localization has not worked after installing the core (Front End and/or Admin) SP .mo files for a given language. One must remember that Simple:Press is now driven by themes. The majority of the text displayed in the forum is derived from the theme file – NOT the core SP files.

For a given language, one needs to also add the active theme’s translation .mo file and the .mo file for each active plugin that has a display component.

Language selection for a Word:Press hosted site with a Simple:Press forum has several distinct levels.

    • Word:Press “Site Language”

The overall Word:Press website language is controlled through the Word:Press Admin menu by the “Site Language” selection at Settings > General Setting where languages can be selected for installation and display. This selection will cause the selected language WP translation files to be used on Word:Press Admin panels and WP front end (user viewed) pages. Be aware that all of the phrases for WP pages and its plugins may not be completely translated. WP post content will likely be in whatever language the poster used and not translated to the “Site Language”. More detail is contained below at Installing and Selecting the Word:Press “Site Language”.

    • Forum “Language Translations”

For the language specified by the “Site Language” setting above there may be Simple:Press translation files for forum phrases at the localization website. If they exist, they can be individually installed/downloaded to the correct forum-language sub-folders without manually going to the localization website, navigating to the desired language translation files, downloading them, and relocating them to the proper forum-language sub-folders. The translation files are used in the forum for “Core” (“Front End” [forum user viewed] and forum “Admin”) phrases, active “Theme” phrases, and active “Plugins” phases.

Regardless of the method used to install/download the language translation files, the files MUST be of the “.mo” format.

This coordinated download process is accomplished on the “Integration – Language Translations” forum panel displayed from the Word:Press Admin menu at Forum > Integration > Language Translations.

More detail is contained below at Coordinated Language Translation File Download Using the Simple:Press “Language Translations” Selection.

    • Manual Downloading and Locating of Forum Translation Files

If the above sequence of setting the “Site Language” and using the “Language Translations” process does not support downloading of desired forum translation files from the localization website, one can manually go to that site, navigate to the appropriate “Core”, “Plugins”, or “Themes” translation file type section, find the specific category of translation file (Front End, Admin, Plugin [by name], or Theme [by name]), select the desired language, and download its translation file(s). Regardless of the method used to install/download the language translation files, the files MUST be of the “.mo” format.

The translation file(s) must then be manually located to the appropriate forum-language sub-folder.
More detail is contained below at Manual Installation of Simple:Press Language Translation Files.

    • Forum User Selection of “Front End” Language

After the appropriate language translation files have been downloaded/installed, downloading, activating, and setting up the Simple:Press “Language & Theme Selection” plugin allows another layer of language localization by providing the option for the forum user to select the language to viewed on the displayed forum pages.

      • In the footer, by default, of the forum page, the forum user can select the language of choice from the options in the “Language” drop down menu.
        • If the user selects “Site-Default”, the language selected by the Admin for the Word:Press “Site Language” will be the language phrases displayed.
      • A language will only show up for forum user selection if its “Front End” translation file reside in the appropriate forum language sub-folder.
      • The theme phrases and plugin phrases will be displayed in the forum user selected language only if their translation files for the selected language are also in their appropriate forum language sub-folders.

More detailed is contained at the on our Plugin: Language & Theme Selection Codex page.

Simple:Press GlotPress Site Overview

The glotpress.simple-press.com website is the repository for all the Simple:Press language translation files.
Selecting the “Getting Started Guide” link at the localization website provides information regarding the use of the website, use of its translation files, and requesting access. On that page:

  • Select the “register a username here” link to register and obtain a password to the site.
    • Note: Only registered users can navigate to the project and language files on the site and manually download them, if necessary.
  • Select the “Contact Forum” link to:
    • Sign up to volunteer to be a translator and/or validator for a language translation project.
    • Request the addition of a translation file for a desired language if it is not currently available.

Three types of language translations files reside at the Localization Website for translating forum message strings from English (United States) to other languages for display. Some parts of the forum may not currently have translation files and some of the phrases in existing translation files may not be translated yet. The structure of the website has translation projects divided into the three types:

  • Simple:Press Language files for translating Core forum message strings
    • Selecting the “Simple Press Core” link allows viewing and/or downloading of available language translation files for “Front End” (forum user viewed) phrases or forum “Admin” phrases.
  • Simple:Press Plugin Language Files for translating forum plugin message strings
    • Selecting the “Simple Press Plugins” link allows viewing and/or downloading of available language translation files for Simple:Press plugins.
      • Note: A new plugin may not always have translation files available coincident with its initial release, but should follow shortly thereafter.
  • Simple:Press Theme Language Files for translating forum theme message strings
    • Selecting the “Simple Press Themes” link allows viewing and/or downloading of available language translation files for Simple:Press themes.
      • Note: A theme’s translation files also provide translations for its standard supplied Child Theme Framework.
      • Note: A new theme may not always have translation files available coincident with its initial release, but should follow shortly thereafter.

Language Translation “.mo” Files Overview

Both the naming convention for and the placement of the translation files must be correct for localization to be properly implemented.

  • Language Translation File Naming Convention
If a translation file for Simple:Press Core phrases, a plugin’s phrases, and/or a theme’s phrases is available in a given language, it will come in the form of a file that contains the language “code” (eg. “it” for Italian) in it’s filename with an extension of ‘.mo’.

WARNING: Some plugin and WordPress language files come with a ‘double’ language code like ‘it_IT’ for Italian. This will be the case for languages spoken in many countries. The important point is that the language code displayed on the “Integration – Language Settings” panel under the “Language” section MUST be matched for the WordPress language file and ALL Simple:Press “Core”, “Theme” and “Plugin” language files.

If they do not, edit the language translation file name to match the displayed code. For example, if “Your site language is set to fr_FR – French” is shown, the “fr_FR” must be matched in all the French translation file names. In the example, ‘sp-fr_FR.mo’ for forum “Front End” phrases and ‘spa-fr_FR.mo’ for forum “Admin” phrases.

Any Simple:Press language file it MUST begin with the component short name followed by a hyphen and then the desired single or double language code with the extension of .mo and all will be well. For example, ‘spa-it_IT.mo” (Admin – Italian), ‘spDefault-fr_FR’ (Default Theme – French), and sp-birthdays-de_DE (Birthday Plugin – German).

  • Language Translation File Placement
Translation files of a given type are to reside in a unique forum folder location as defined on the “Integration – Storage Locations” forum Admin panel available through the forum Admin menu at Forum > Integration > Storage Locations.

      • Forum core translation files are to reside at the location indicated by the “Simple:Press Language Files” entry.
        • The default location for forum core translation files is the folder “…/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/simple-press”.
      • Forum Plugin translation files are to reside at the location indicated by the “Simple:Press Plugin Language Files” entry.
        • The default location for forum plugin translation files is the folder “…/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/sp-plugins”.
      • Forum Theme translation files are to reside at the location indicated by the “Simple:Press Theme Language Files” entry.
        • The default location for forum core translation files is the folder “…/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/sp-themes”.

Please note that adding language files can sometimes utilize much of the available php memory. If “out of memory errors” start occurring after installing a language file, then more memory will need to be allocated. This can usually be arranged by asking the website host.

Language Translation Selection Sequences

Below are steps detailing the various processes employed to prepare a site for displaying language translations.

    • Installing and Selecting the Word:Press “Site Language”

This process installs and selects the languages available for the website, including the WP Admin panels and WP user-viewed pages.

Note: Repeat the sequence of steps below to install each desired WP available language and cause phrases to be displayed on the WP pages in that language.
Note: Perform the sequence of steps below clicking on an “Installed” language to cause phrases to be displayed on the WP pages in that installed language.
      • From the Word:Press Admin menu click on Settings > General Settings to display the Word:Press “General Settings” panel.
      • Scroll to the bottom of the panel to see “Site Language” and the current site language setting displayed in the drop down menu window.
        • This setting is the language selection for the Word:Press portions of the site, both “Admin” and “User-Viewed”.
      • Click on the down arrowhead to the right of the window to show the drop down menu with sections for “Installed” and “Available” language translations.
      • Click on any of the “Available” languages (for example, “Francais” to cause it to be installed, to transition it in the menu from the “Available” category to the “Installed” category as well as being set as the current language for the site.
      • Click on the “Save Changes” button (the “Save Changes” may be in another language) to save the setting.
        • For the example, the Word:Press Admin and User-Viewed pages now have phrases displayed in French.

    • Coordinated Language Translation File Download Using the Simple:Press “Language Translations” Selection

This process is used in conjunction with the WP “Site Language” setting to download and properly locate Simple:Press forum language translation files from ‘glotpress.simple-press.com’ without having to visit the site and manually download/re-locate SP Core, active Plugin, and active Theme language translation files.

NOTE: Repeat the totality of the steps below for each language to coordinate initial Word:Press and Simple:Press translation file installations.
NOTE: Revisit this sequence and repeat appropriate steps for each language to obtain any language translation file updates when new versions of Simple:Press, its plugins, or its themes have been released.
NOTE: Revisit this sequence and repeat appropriate steps for each language when new Simple:Press themes or plugins are installed and activated.
      • Perform the steps in Installing and Selecting the Word:Press “Site Language” to install and select a “Site Language”.
      • From the Word:Press Admin menu click on Forum > Integration > Language Translations to display the panel with the “Integration – Language Settings” section indicating the current site language and “Integration – Language Translations” section listing the language translation files available for forum phrases that best match the language selected for “Site Language”.
        • If the “Site Language” is set to “United States/English”:
          • The message “Your site language setting is English/USA and therefore no translation files are required for Simple:Press.” is displayed.
          • The rest of the panel is blank with no language options displayed.
        • If the “Site Language” is set to a language not having a Translation Project at GlotPress.simple-press.com:
          • The message “Your WordPress site language setting has not been recognised by Simple:Press. Please see This Codex Page for manual install instructions.” is displayed where “This Codex Page” is a link to this page, the Simple:Press “Localization” Codex page.
            • One should go to the Manual Installation of Simple:Press Language Translation Files section of this page.
          • The rest of the panel is blank with no language options displayed.
        • If the “Site Language” is set to a language recognized by Simple:Press (other than “United States/English”), for example “italiano”:
          • In the “Integration – Language Settings” section the message “Your site language is set to ‘Y’.” is displayed, where ‘Y’ = “language code” – “language name”. In the example “Your site language is set to it_IT – Italian” the Italian language code is “it_IT“.
WARNING: Each and every Simple:Press language translation “.mo” file for a language must MATCH the EXACT language code shown on this panel for localization to operate properly in that language. If the installed/downloaded files do not match, edit their filenames to match.
          • The “Integration – Language Translations” section is divided into sub-sections and before translation files have been installed the configuration is:
            • “Core Simple:Press” with entries for:
              • “Core: Simple:Press X.Y.Z” (forum phrases displayed to users in the “Front End”) where X.Y.Z is the Simple:Press Version Number, for example “5.5.5”, and
                  • an “Install” button preceded by an icon containing an “X” within a red circle if a translation file is available.
                  • the message “No Translation Project Exists” is displayed if a translation file is NOT available.
                • Click on the “Install” button to download the forum “Front End” language translation file for the specified language into the correct ‘forum-language’ sub-folder (the default being …/forum-language/simple-press).

              • Repeat the “Click on the “Install” button” step for each active plugin.

      • Removing or Updating (Getting Latest) Language Translation Files

When returning to the panel without having changed the WP “Site Language” setting or after returning the WP “Site Language” setting to a previously installed language (one having both WP and SP translation files previously installed), for each of the items in the “Integration – Language Translations” section there is a “Remove” button (with “Remove” possibly in the chosen language) and a “Get Latest” button (with “Get Latest” possibly in the chosen language).

        • Click on the “Remove” button for a “Core”, “Theme” or “Plugin” element to remove its language translation file from the associated “forum-language” sub-folder.
          • An icon containing an “X” within a red circle indicates the element’s translation file has been removed.
          • One must leave the panel and return to it if it is desired to “re-install” a translation file for the element.
        • OR
        • Click on the “Get Latest” button to check glotpress.simple-press.com for an updated language translation file and download it to the associated ‘forum-language’ sub-folder.
          • An icon containing a “check mark” within a green circle indicates the element’s translation file was updated if it needed to be.

      • Adding its Translation File(s) After Downloading/Activating a Simple:Press Theme or Simple:Press Plugin

After downloading a Simple:Press theme and making it the active theme or downloading and activating a Simple:Press plugin, the newly added/activated item will have an entry on the panel in the appropriate “Integration – Language Settings” subsection.

        • Follow the steps above down to the “Warning” then skip to the steps for “Active Theme” or “Plugin” to download the item’s translation file for the current WP “Site Language” language into the proper ‘forum-language’ sub-folder.
        • For additional languages:
          • Change the WP “Site Language” to the desired language.
          • Follow the steps above for “Active Theme” or “Plugin” to download the item’s translation file for the current WP “Site Language”.
          • Repeat the process for each additional language.

    • Manual Installation of Simple:Press Language Translation Files

If the Word:Press “Site Language” selections along with the Simple:Press “Integration – Language Settings” panel operations do not result in the desired Simple:Press Core (Front End or Admin), Theme, or Plugin language translation files being downloaded and properly located in ‘forum-language’ sub-folders, one can individually download the files from the localization website and locate them manually into the correct ‘forum-language’ sub-folders.

NOTE: This is considered a backup method of obtaining/locating Simple:Press language translation files. The Coordinated Language Translation File Download Using the Simple:Press “Language Translations” Selection described above is primary.

NOTE: If manual translation file download and placement has been required on the site, revisit these steps for each language to obtain any language translation file updates when new versions of Simple:Press, its plugins, or its themes have been released. If manual translation file download and placement has been required on the site, revisit these steps for each language when new Simple:Press themes or plugins are installed and activated.

      • Finding and Storing ANY Simple:Press Core Language Translation ‘mo’ files

The Simple:Press core’s (“Admin” and “Front End”) available language translation files with translation statistics, and message translations can be viewed, downloaded, and appropriately placed as described in the following steps.

        • Find the Simple:Press Core (“Front End” and “Admin”) Language Files folder where “Front End” or “Admin” translation files are to be stored. (See Language Translation File Placement above.
          • Note: Do not confuse the forum-language folders. There are three (3) different ones as discussed above.
          • The location of the Simple:Press Core Language File folder is identified by the “Simple:Press Language Files” entry on the “Integration – Storage Locations” panel viewed from the forum Admin menu at Forum > Integration > Storage Locations.
            • The default location for Simple:Press core language files is …/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/simple-press.
              • If this path is changed, it is important to note that the core language file needs to reside in the language sub-folder for sp core wherever it has been moved and however it has been renamed.
              • See Storage Locations for more information.
        • Go to the core translation files at Core Translations.
        • Click on the translation Version link to see the entries for “Admin” and “Front End”.
        • Click on the Version Number link to see the link to “Admin” and “Front End” translations.
        • Click on the “Admin” link or the “Front End” link to see the languages available for the selected type.
        • Click on the Language Name link for the desired language to see forum messages and their available translations.
        • If available, export the file for the selected language to the forum language core folder (default is …/forum-language/simple-press).
          • Scroll to the bottom of a translation page to see the word “Export” (the Export Link) followed by a 1st drop down menu with translation phrase options followed by the word “as” followed by a 2nd drop down menu with translation file export options.
          • In the 1st drop down menu click its up/down arrowhead to see the phrase options and select the desired option (typically “all current” is chosen).
          • In the 2nd drop down menu click its up/down arrowhead to see the export file options and select “Machine Object Message Catalog (.mo).”
          • Click on “Export” (the Export Link) to download the selected language “.mo” file.
            • Be sure to note the language file locale (filename) that is being downloaded so it can be found and relocated if necessary.
            • For example, the Russian translation file for the Simple:Press “Admin” could be “spa-ru.mo” and the Chinese (Taiwan) translation file for the Simple:Press “Front End” could be “sp-zh_TW.mo”.
            • Because the core language file locale can be cryptic after all the core translation files desired have been downloaded and if the Language and Theme Selection Plugin is being used, it may be helpful to provide a more understandable language “Display Name” for the forum user to see when selecting a forum display language as discussed in the “Setting Up the Language File Naming Section Options” section under “Plugin Administrative Options” on the Plugin: Language and Theme Selection Codex page.
          • If the language file was not downloaded to the forum language core folder (the default is …/forum-language/simple-press), find the file and move it to the forum language core folder, wherever the folder is located and whatever it is named.
        • Repeat the steps above for each language to have a translation file available for either the “Front End” or “Admin” phrases.
        •
      • Finding and Storing ANY Simple:Press Theme’s Language Translation ‘mo’ files

A Simple:Press theme’s available language translation files with translation statistics, and message translations can be viewed, downloaded, and appropriately placed as described in the following steps.

        • Note: The theme language translation files also provide translations for the stardard supplied Child Theme Frameworks.
        • Find the Simple:Press Theme Language Files folder where theme translation files are to be stored. (See Language Translation File Placement above.
          • Note: Do not confuse the forum-language folders. There are three (3) different ones as discussed above.
          • The location of the Simple:Press Theme Language File folder is identified by the “Simple:Press Theme Language Files” entry on the “Integration – Storage Locations” panel viewed from the forum Admin menu at Forum > Integration > Storage Locations.
            • The default location for Simple:Press theme language files is …/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/sp-themes.
              • If this path is changed, it is important to note that the core language file needs to reside in the language sub-folder for sp themes wherever it has been moved and however it has been renamed.
              • See Storage Locations for more information.
        • Go to the theme translation files at Theme Translations.
        • Scroll down the list and click on the name of the theme whose language files are being sought to see the translation file Version Number available.
        • Click on the Version Number link to see the link to the languages available for the theme.
        • Click on the Language Name link for the desired language to see theme messages and their available translations.
        • If available, export the file for the selected language to the forum language theme folder (default is …/forum-language/sp-themes).
            • For example, the Czech translation file for the Simple:Press “Default” theme could be “spDefault-cs_CZ.mo” and the German translation file for the Simple:Press “Reboot” theme could be “spReboot-de.mo”.
          • If the language file was not downloaded to the forum language theme folder (the default is …/forum-language/sp-theme), find the file and move it to the forum language theme folder, wherever the folder is located and whatever it is named.
        • Repeat the steps above for each language to have a translation file available for a theme’s phrases.

      • Finding and Storing ANY Simple:Press Plugin’s Language Translation ‘mo’ files

A Simple:Press plugin’s available language translation files with translation statistics, and message translations can be viewed, downloaded, and appropriately placed as described in the following steps.

      • Find the Simple:Press Plugin Language Files folder where plugin translation files are to be stored. (See Language Translation File Placement above.
        • Note: Do not confuse the forum-language folders. There are three (3) different ones as discussed above.
        • The location of the Simple:Press Plugin Language File folder is identified by the “Simple:Press Plugin Language Files” entry on the “Integration – Storage Locations” panel viewed from the forum Admin menu at Forum > Integration > Storage Locations.
          • The default location for Simple:Press plugin language files is …/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language/sp-plugins.
            • If this path is changed, it is important to note that the plugin’s language file needs to reside in the language sub-folder for sp plugins wherever it has been moved and however it has been renamed.
            • See Storage Locations for more information.
      • Go to the plugin translation files at Plugin Translations.
      • Scroll down the list and click on the name of the plugin whose language files are being sought to see the translation file Version Number available.
      • Click on the Version Number link to see the languages available.
      • Click on the Language Name link for the desired language to see forum messages and their available translations.
      • If available, export the file for the selected language to the forum language plugin folder (default is …/forum-language/sp-plugins)
        • Scroll to the bottom of a translation page to see the word “Export” (the Export Link) followed by a 1st drop down menu with translation phrase options followed by the word “as” followed by a 2nd drop down menu with translation file export options.
        • In the 1st drop down menu click its up/down arrowhead to see the phrase options and select the desired option (typically “a” current” is chosen).
          • For example, the Swedish translation file for the Simple:Press “Theme & Language Selection” plugin could be “sp-usel-sv_SE.mo” and the French translation file for the Simple:Press Birthday plugin could be “sp-birthdays-fr.mo”.
        • If the language file was not downloaded to the forum language plugin folder (the default is …/forum-language/sp-plugin), find the file and move it to the forum language plugin folder, wherever it is located and whatever it is named.
      • Repeat the steps above for each language to have a translation file available for the plugin.
      • Repeat the steps above for each plugin and for each language to have a translation file available for the plugin.
