4.2 – Plans

We have agreed that 4.2 needs to be a significantly lighter development and very focused. I would also suggest we try and get it into the field in November (more later on why!).

After the obvious bug fixes and any further possible optimisation I propose the following are the main target areas:

  • A complete overhaul and updating of Blog/Topic Linking. We have lots of requests and it is one of our USP's and is long overdue a revisit.
  • The same goes for Private Messaging. There is a list of features requested and we especially need to deal with the selection of recipients.
  • Private RSS Feeds is another one even if, firstly, we simpy investigate the feed-key plugin to see if we can adapt the model used. It seems like quite a god one to me, and fairly simple, if we can swing it.
  • Cleran up ALL of our Javascript. I have probably got through about a third for 4.1 and it would be nice to finish this off. In partocular I would like to try out the new TinyMCE version which runs under jQuery making it smaller.

I am suggesting we aim for November for two reasons. The first is that this lot really isn't that big in terms of development time and while the inevitable bugs, interim 4.1.x releases and WP update suport will all get in the way we should be able to manage it. More importantly, the best time for me personally to concentrate effort on coding is during the Winter when i tend to hibernate anyway and the big one is going to be V5.

Sounds good and I like to make sure its before end of year too!

I would like to clean up some of the bugs and minor enhancements we have.  The main thing is no big, new features…

Two other things we should clean up is the login/registration (can we model after some other plugin?) if its not a big deal and I want to do the avatar pool which is light and simple and would be nice enhancement to profile.

OK – back to 4.2! These are the items I have for PMs. (Numbers are ticket numbers)

  •  96 – Duplicated PM Threads – Still see the problem now and then
  •  61 – Quoting a post/pm – If I can clean up one then I get the other thrown it.
  • 279 – Admin Option to remove PM’s after a preset period
  • 296 – Option Limit PM sending to the forum post ‘send’ button
  • 370 – PM Recipient Setting – get the new tool into place
  • 194 – bcc list for pms (not sure about this one)
  • —– Inbox/Sentbox paging
  • —– User decides on email notification instead of global
  • —– Let user opt out of PMs
  • 350 – Admin option to not let users ‘send to all’
  • 350 – Admin option to only allow users to select recipients from their buddies list
  • —– If you have a new message then allow the Inbox icon to open it AJAX style

And this is what I have for blog linking. I;m not even sure I can remember what all these are about now but I am sure it will come back to me.

  •  55 – Linked post using the ‘more’ tag
  •  98 – Videos in blog post linked – preserve code
  • 449 – Create forum post in blog comment section
  • 202 – Publish Post hook deprecated
  •  46 – Linking future dated posts
  •  14 – Topic Posts as blog comments

  •  45 – Add option to auto create blog link topics for every post
  • 178 – Forum posts as Blog Comments – Enhancements
  •  51 – Blog/Post Linking – enhancements
  •  72 – break blog link from wp post

  • —– Create forum post from WP comment area as entered
  • —– Update topic if blog post is updated
  • —– Limit number of posts showing as comments
  • —– Remote posting and linking (XMLRPC)

And for Javascript:

  • Clean it up and lean more closely to jQuery. SHould be able to remove the old AHAH code.

And for TinyMCE:

  • if it works, adopt the smaller, leaner tinyMCE jQuery plugin

That’s my 4.2 plans. Al of them. November is going to be out as I am on vacation most of October but let;s ensure we get this out by teh end of the year and don’t load it up any further.

some adds from me.

— BuddyPress (yes it's a MU thing) activity posting.

BuddyPress has sample plugin code to mark and display activities. I could get it to you.

— Some small tie ins with BuddyPress Avatars (or figure out why current links don't work) and Profiles.
