Beta 4.1 Forums

We are really going to need a main forum for 4.1 beta and what we have done in the past is allowed that forum to become the main forum after the beta period. I don't think I see any harm in that.

I would suggest removing the 'Alpha' sub-forum now as well. It is redundant.

Another, and perhaps best option, would be to actually create a new Group for 4.1. This would have the main 4.1 Beta forum and a sub-forum for the translations. When 4.1 comes out of beta, the current 4.0 moves down to 'older versions' and we consolidate the 4.1 'group' back into the main support group.

Using a new Group would have the benefit of clearly distinguishing the different version. It would divorce the 4.1 beta forum from the current 'MU/BuddyPress', 'Coding' and 'Skins' forums but I think that is OK during the beta period.

In keeping with our policy of switching skins every now and then I also propose switching skins when the beta goes up. I would quite like to give 'default' a showing… it's been a long time…

definitely agree with removing the alpha forum, that was the plan…

was thinking of a new beta subforum, but think I like your idea better, so yeah, sounds good…

policy?  didnt know we had one…  not sure switching skins would be my preferred idea… looking at default, it doesnt match the site nearly as well as the smoke/ash combination…  seems like one of the benefits of the support forum is to also showcase the forum itself, including integration with the wp theme…  just worried that default and not sure which icon set you are considering, will do that…  this integration looks really tight…

understand getting tired of something and wanting occasional change…  it is just a skin, so despite my thoughts, its not really that big a deal one way or the other…  were you also thinking of changing the wp theme?

WP-theme? Oh please no! Last time we talked about this was when we switched out 'salmon-river' and I thought us both agreed that switching skins every now and then was a good thing as a showcase. I think I am gettng tired of the greys… don't get me wrong, 'smoke' is great, but the greys are getting to me!

One of the things I like about 'default' are the background gradients. And it looks good with the 'ash' icons.

I guess I could add some graphics to 'Smoke' and create a 'smoke2'.. Smile

I am not in any way hard on this. It's just the endless greys….

I have no issue with changing skins – and like you dont want to change the wp theme…  I just dont want the skin change to detract from the site and worried that since default (or most of the others) dont really match the wp theme it might be a detraction.   smoke2 would sound better to me, but thats more time…

Changing the subjext a little but related.

I propose that for 4.1 – due in part to it's giant bulk and large number of folders and files – that the ONLY download we offer is the 'minimal' with default skins and icon. The download page can then link in nice big graphics to a 'skin' selection download page and then onto an 'icon' selection download page.

I am not proposing this for the beta but for when it goes gold…

I coule probably live with that for the beta BUT we should also make that very clear and perhaps add it to the splash page after upgrade/upload because it will instantly render many forums that use other skins, unviewable or least make them very very ugly…
