Topic Row

The topic row is potentially becoming somewhat cluttered and disorganised. This is particularly true of users with narrow forum columns.

This first image shows the current V4.1 row and is taken from our own site using current widths and layout. As you can see, a lot of space is taken up with the first/last post boxes and even with this short topic title, the icons and the title have been forced to wrap. The admin tool icon is also consuming a column.

In this next image, accepting that the row needs to be taller to accommodate everything I have re-arranged the first/last post boxes and squeezed them a little. I have also removed the admin tools column and the whole row becomes far more acceptable and 'cleaner'. Note that even with this change, the height of the row is actually smaller – an added bonus.

But it is still – at least in my opinion – cluttered and disorganised. Plus we need to get the admin tools back. This third image is my proposal for 4.1. It is no taller than image 2 but is cleaner, crisper and more presentable all round. It allows for both the topic title and the tags list to wrap normally (i.e., full width) if they need to, the thin grey line under the topic title helps to make it stand out and we have a new home for the admin icons (and don't forget these are not normally shown).

Comments are, of course, requested…

Generally speaking, I think it looks great…  certainly the topic title area is a big improvement…  one odd thing – it appears in the image above the the icons are progressively getting smaller, from blog link icon to pinned icon.  are they really getting smaller, or just an optical illusioni?

I must also say that the admin tools icon looks out of place with the forum icon…  I like the fact of putting it there reduces the need for an extra column…  It looks like you reduced the size of the forum icon too? no?  nor can I think at the moment of a better place to put the admin tools icon…

No – nothing was resized except for the post ratings box and number. Oh and the tags (badly). The am was to get them the same size as the topic status. Not was the forum icon altered. I did dim all of the icons a little so they they are less dominant.

I had the same problem with the tools… am open to suggestions of course.

I would say until we come up with better (if any) location for the admin tools icon, press forward with this…  if we do come up with something better, its only one image Wink

Am about to commit the first cut.

This includes revamped admin tools dropdowns. Have moved to jQuery which enables us to move a small chunk of JS code

OK – I know that this was my proposal and basically I did what I said I would. But I hate it. Something has to give… this topic title box is potentially so busy… It looks awful. (Adding the new styling to the tags has made it even worse). Things are totally out of kilter and we have completely lost the crisp, clean look that a forum should have.

Need some fresh ideas…

will have to think as no ideas come to mind… bear in mind that most sites wont using post ratings and topic status… and perhaps not even tagging…

I would throw out optional columns, if the data is being used, but we have already seen folks trying to fit too much into too narrow a space…  most large forum sites I know are full screen width for a reason…

I can try to survey some other forum app sites and see if any ideas pop up…

I would not recommend “hiding” the info in a popup behind a link…  a mouse over?  not sure that would be good either…

could make some of that information optional to be shown on the forum view and let users decide to show it or not???

or add another thin row below the actual topic row for displaying all that kind of information…  dont put it all in the topic name column, but use all the columns width combined…

just throwing out ideas…

I agree hiding it in a popup is no good and as for options then it is all optional now anyway. And because of that I would prefer not to put it all in a column although if someone did have everything turned on it wouldn't fit well in a column either.

I think we have to prepare a new set of smaller icons for starters that ALL icon sets use (as standard anyway). And I think  need to go back to floating them right. I am working up an  alternative in photoshop but am not feeling that good about it yet.

some day, I have to learn how to do that photoshop thingy…  I can take an existing image and spruce it up, add stuff etc…  but layers and what not – greek to me…

OK/How about these two? The first is for the forum index rwo and the second for the topic index row:

Oh dear….. our image uploader isn’t working in 4.0.3 although it is probably the new server settings.

I will raise a ticket for this and email the graphics instead

[Update] No wont raise a tcket because this looks like a server setting.

looks promising to me…  a couple of notes…

can you add some padding above the icons on the right?  they are at the very top and should align with the forum/topic titlle

the one thing I am not sure about is the topic status…  it just looks out of place all white…  what would you think about grey background like the rest of the row and then putting it in a button like the tags?
