Unread posts

I’m really sorry to keep going on about this, but I want to make

sure I’m not going mad. I now have posts that refuse to be ‘read’. I

thought I’d figured it out, but look at this screencast because I just

don’t get it.

Now, I’m sure those topics should have the new post notice removed shouldn’t they? Any idea what’s going on here? It only seems to have done this since I became a moderator, so I’m guessing the two events are connected.

Are you saying this is not caused by the queue posts as I outlined in the other thread response?

I’m not sure I fully understand your response in the other thread, why would my unread messages be influenced by the queue posts? I understand they won’t be removed from the admin bar, but I wasn’t using that. I was simply reading messages in topics.

When I have read a message in the forum, what possible reason logical or otherwise, would there be for it to stay marked as ‘unread’ for me? How does the queue have anything to do with my new posts list?

I feel like I’m missing a piece of the jigsaw here, but it makes no sense to me that a post would remain unread after I’ve read it.

Well I did ask if the ones in the queue were the ones that were staying marked as ‘unread’.

You are now a moderator. This means that in addition to your ‘personal’ queue of unread posts you also have the admins queue ‘woven’ into it. You might well read a post that is in the queue, but until it is REMOVED from the queue is will still register as an unread post. it is saying ‘I want attention – someone deal with me’. The problem, I guess, is that they way we have it set up here currently you can read it but not remove it.

Right, yes I think that is the issue, my personal ‘new posts’ list is overridden by the admin ‘new posts’ queue. So until it’s marked as read by an admin it will always appear as unread to me! Of course if you mark a post as read and I haven’t seen it yet then my personal ‘new posts’ list works as expected.

I doesn’t look like there’s a way to resolve this because I totally understand the need for you to keep control of the admin queue. However, perhaps an idea to think about for a future version is to seperate the admin queue from the new posts list. That way, I could see what posts are still awaiting attention from an admin, but it wouldn’t effect my new posts.

Currently I can see what posts are unread in the admin queue, but I’m powerless to do anything about it. So there’s really no point me seeing that information… does that make sense to you? The only list I really need to know about are the posts awaiting approval.

Let’s bring Steve in on this one as well as it would effect all users of course.

I can see both sides of the argument and they are both right.

What we COULD do is NOT include queued posts when both of these conditions apply:

  1. When the user is a forum moderator
  2. When moderators are not granted permission to remove posts from the queue.

That’s a real easy change and if we all agree we can get this in now.

That would make sense to me, so I’d have my new-posts list back and it won’t be effected by the queue?

In the situation you are talking about would I still be able to see the queue in the admin bar? It would make sense if I can, because that way I get the best of both worlds. I see what an admin has read and dealt with, but I still have my own new-posts list totally independant of the admin queue!

I’m guessing you’ve updated it now because I have my new post list working perfectly. I can now see what messages I haven’t read but I also  still get to see the unread list in the queue via the admin bar. Brilliant!

Now here’s another idea for a future version Cool

Currently if I go to a post awaiting moderation I can use the quick “Edit Tools” to approve the post, but I can’t see the content of the post becuase it just says “Post awaiting approval by a moderator” or something similar. Of course if I use the admin bar I can see the content of the post and approve it from there, but would it be possible to check the members usergroup and if they have moderator permissions enable them to the see post on the forum itself? Obviously keep the notice about it awaiting approval, but enable the moderator/admin to see the post in the forum.

Just throwing about ideas as I use the forum from a moderartors perspective Laugh

I may have spoken too soon, looks like my new posts list isn’t working at all now! I had an email to say there was a new post in a topic I’m subscribed too, but going to the forum it doesn’t show a new post icon.

In fact there were quite a few new posts I hadn’t read but none of them were showing up as new. Every post is marked as read for me without viewing it.

Did you log out and log back in again after the timestamp of those posts?

No, I haven’t logged out at all, I’m just not getting any new posts show as unread.
