Watched Topics

I tend to think the 'watched topics' is one of the very best things we have put in to V4 but… it's a bit of a pain (a) getting to them and (b) removing them.

How about this: Clicking on the 'Watching' icon opens an ahah popup showing you the list of the topics you are watching. It could show you which ones have new posts you have not read and could also include a remove option against each one. And, of course, clicking on the topic takes you directly to it… The popup can be nicely graphical with a decent UI….

boo hoo… andy doesnt like my watched topics…  jk…

I have been extensively using it myself on this support forum and found it very valuable.  The biggest headache for me has been removing a watched topic.

I like the idea of showing ones that have new unread posts too.

I am not sure I see the advantage of a popup though.  In fact, it might get pretty hairy if you have a lot of topics being watched.  The current mechanism has paging in it for this very reason.  It would be pretty easy to flag new unread posts in the watched topics at the top with diff icon like forums/topics now.  Could also add a remove icon in another column.

Not necessarily opposed to the ahah popup, but not sure I see the advantage and some potential downside.

Think you'll find it already does this…. at least if it plugged into standard code it will.

The advantage of the popup (and because it would just be a nicely presented list so paging wouldn't be an issue) is that it saves the intermediate page load. You would get directly to the topic and not have to load the list first – and that would be more than one page load of the one you wanted wasn't on page one after all!

But yes – removals are more cumbersome.

I have coded up a first cut of what I meant above. This is largely, at the moment, to further the discussion and can easily be reverted shoukld we decide against it.
