Small Image size

Just out of curiosity why do you use such small thumbnails and image size in the forums here?

Since there is about 800px available why not use a thumbnail of 750 or so? That way an image will, in most cases, look correct without someone having to click on it to enlarge?

Is it an issue with bandwidth, load time or something else?

I am just asking because, IMHO, a larger initial image would look more professional.

This is not a documentation discussion but I thought I would ask the question here instead of the regular forum so it would be something that can be discussed just between the members here.

certainly the bandwidth for the thumbnail is smaller than for a full width image even if it fits within the width… we explicitly show the thumbnail not a full image with a height/width restriction, so bandwidth need is reduced…

I guess we have always just assumed throw up a small thumbnail and let it expand if one desires to view it… not everyone who visits a topic will want to see the full image…

but frankly, not sure we have ever really thought about it very long… or even discussed it…

so, yeah. lets discuss… Andy, any thoughts?

It goes back to the File Manager in V4 really. We set that to create small thumbnails because they showed up in the file browser where you don’t want them to be too big. Now in V5 we show the actual thumbnail so we don’t really want to resize it for display.

I take the point though and inb most respects you are probably right.

I would suggest if we change the thumbnail display size we should change the thumbnail creation size to match it for best quality…

[Additional] Another thing is that is many respects it depends on what sort of forum you are running. In most types of forums then I can see that bigger thumbnails would be desirable but I am not so sure if that necessarily applies to a support forum. But as I say – happy to change it.

The support forum also has to be considered as a demo forum. People looking into using SP are, and should, browse the support forum to see how it’s laid out, flows, etc.

They might be turned off on how it looks with the small images not realizing it is your choice to have them very small and it is easily configurable to match their needs.
