Version 5 to 6 upgrade instructions states MUST update plugins? How??

I have previously been running Simple:Press as a silver member with several plugins.   As recommended I have updated to version 6.0 and reached the stage where it states that I “MUST” update the plugins to the latest version.

Having previously paid to use several plugins I now find I can’t download them to continue my update unless I pay for them a second time.

Can anyone advise how I go about downloading all of my old plugins again for the 6.0 upgrade process?   I’m now stuck in limbo with a v6.0 site with none of my old plugins working.

If you already purchased plugins from us in the past, please login to your account on our site.  Any plugins you purchased before should be available to be downloaded in your account area.

Thanks.

Hi:

hmmm…we can’t find any record of a purchase of themes or plugins under your email address.  If you still have your receipt for the themes and plugin purchases can you please forward to us (Email address is on our contact form here: https://simple-press.com/contact/).

Thanks.

My issue has been mostly resolved.

The SP wordpress update integration refreshed overnight and listed the updates for my SP plugins and themes.  I have been able to update them successfully via this method.

Email sent re the missing plugin details in my account.

Hi:

We got your email and tried to send you a reply. It unfortunate was returned with an ‘access denied’ message from your mail server.

Basically what we said in it was this:

That’s the receipt for your membership back in 2013 – which was for support only.  But as part of that membership you got discounted plugins which would come with their own receipt when you purchased and downloaded them from our store.  Can you send that receipt please?

Thanks.

I’m afraid you’re mistaken (no disrespect intended!), in 2012-2013 there were two paid “membership” options available for Simple:Press users.

The first option was “Silver” which was a 2 Month membership which provided access to developer support and access to download any and all available plugins.  Once membership expired access to support was no longer available and plugins could no longer be downloaded.  Updates for all previously downloaded plugins would continue  via the SP update integration within WordPress.

The Gold membership was essentially the same but lasted 12 months.

No purchase of individual plugins was required, the membership simply provided access to a member only area from where the plugin ZIP files could be downloaded directly.

Once memberships expired simple-press.com accounts remained active however access to “http://simple-press.com/download-plugins/” was revoked.

Hence no “receipt” for my plugin downloads exist, as they were just that, simply a hyperlink download.

Perhaps you could amend the 5 to 6 upgrade instructions to include that any previously installed SP Plugins will be updated automatically by WordPress following the core upgrade to SP 6.0.  The instructions currently say that following the upgrade, the plugins must be re-downloaded from the store which appears to be not the case.

Hi:

I can see why you would think that because it probably wasn’t obvious that the free downloads were actually from our store.  Any downloads were recorded and a receipt issued even if the download was free under your membership.  But I don’t see any downloads under your account right now and I have no other way of verifying the downloads otherwise.

Thanks.

Your response is concerning, either you have put this issue of your missing records in the “too hard basket” or you are making false claims of the existence of these download records and receipts.  You may be under the misapprehension that I am seeking access to some plugin that I don’t already possess.  I already have the plugins I need, I do not need to download them again, so the only remaining issue is how you respond next.

If these download records and receipts do exist, it would be wise of you to look into the this issue of missing or incomplete records as it is improbable that I am the only person effected.  At the time simple-press.com made use of the WPDownload-Manager plugin to manage files.  Are you still using this and can you confirm the existence of download records for any user at all between August 2012 and February 2013.

Also can you confirm what you mean by a receipt was issued.  Does this refer to a record on your system? WPdownload-manager?  Or is this an email which was sent to the user?  If it’s the latter, no email was received in relation to any of my downloads from simple-press.com between August 2012 and February 2013.  The plugins were downloaded from “download-manager.php?id=” style links which were listed for each plugin so not so much a “store” setup per se.  There was no requirement to add anything to a shopping cart or go through a purchase process.  I simply clicked the download link for each plugin and was presented with a web browser file download prompt.

Perhaps you could verify for me the existence of your own record of my purchase of a Silver membership, twice.  This was made via the PayPal link provided on the website at that time.  I have provided you the proof of purchase of one of those payments from my end, from what you are saying you should be able to produce your own record of this.  At that time it may have been a manual process of confirming receipt of PayPal payments then activating paid member status on user accounts as access was not instantaneous.

If it helps I can confirm the following file downloads and dates;

Hi Ryan:

I’m not accusing you of anything.  I’m just letting you know what records we have and what I can confirm.  We don’t have WPDownload-Manager installed on the site.  If it was in the past then those records were gone long before we even took control of the site.  The EDD store has been on the site for many years now and an email confirmation is created for every purchase (free or paid).  And, we retain a record in EDD of those purchases.  Unfortunately we have no record for any plugin or theme purchases (free or paid) beyond the membership receipt you provided.

Thanks.

Thank you for confirming the situation.

So in summary, you have no records in relation to long term users who would previously have paid to access plugin downloads.  The issue is not that those users no longer have access to download more plugins, as this has always been the case following a membership expiry.  The issue is that you are emailing all SP users prompting them to upgrade to version 6.0 and providing upgrade instructions which state, “All your plugins MUST be updated to the latest versions. This means downloading new files directly from our store.”

Long term users of course cannot download the updated plugins again as their downloads predate the existence of any Simple:Press Store.  As existing plugins do in fact update automatically via WP update integration following an upgrade to version 6.0, the statement above is misleading at best and could prompt users to pay for their plugins a second time.

not sure what the situation/question is here (have not read the entire thread in detail)…  if you have plugins active, after you upgrade to 6.0, they will update just like normal through the wp updater…   you do not need to download the plugins again…

when the 6.0 upgrade runs, it will deactivate your sp plugins to prevent and errors from occurring due to breaking compatibility changes…  after the core plugin upgrades you can then update the add on plugins via the wp updater..  note, the plugin update available checks are cached, so its possible they wont show for while depending on when wp does checks and stuff… you can always clear that cache to check immediately by clearing the xml cache on forum – toolbox – integration…

I will work withe the new owners to see if the language in the upgrade instructions needs some updating…

If I have misunderstood the issue here, please elaborate…

The S:P 5.0 to 6.0 upgrade instructions state plugins must be updated by downloading them directly from the store.

For long term users who paid for access to plugins prior to the Simple:Press Store being created, there is no record of them having previously downloaded plugins and therefore no access to re-download.  After reading the upgrade instructions, a user may be prompted to purchase their plugins a second time in the false belief that they must be downloaded directly from the store as the instructions state.

This was the situation I was put in and I asked how to download the plugins as per the instructions and was subsequently asked to provide the proof of my purchase.  I emailed the receipt for my Silver Access in 2012-2013 and was told that this was for support only and no plugins.  This is factually incorrect (thank you archive.org) which I pointed out and explained the options available for Simple:Press paid member’s at this time as it appeared that the support member had no knowledge of Simple:Press prior to the last 6 months.  Only when I further expressed my concern at their reply was there an admission that there were no records in relation to my paid membership or plugin downloads due to the current system having not existed at that time.

The upgrade instructions should state that plugins DO NOT need to be re-downloaded, they will update automatically with WP updates following the 5.0 to 6.0 upgrade.  Any user who mistakenly pays for their plugins a second time based on these instructions or other information provided by support staff would best seek professional advice on obtaining a refund of that payment.
