Mostly I want to commend you on an easy upgrade path…

I was running Simple Forum 1.9 on http://www.speakoutwireless.ca when a PHP memory limit problem forced me to upgrade to 2.1.  I was a bit hesitant to upgrade as I thought it’d cause a few incompatibility problems. But all I did was unzip, deactivate, reactive and poof, everything works!

Oh, and http://www.speakoutwireless.ca is a site dedicated to a pay-as-you-go cell phone service in Canada. The company behind the service has a really crappy site, so this site helps consumers to share experiences about the service with each other. It’s been quite a success 😀

I almost forgot… I also use Simple Forum on my blog at http://www.theblog.ca, mostly to support my anti-spam plugin:

The regular comments system and threaded comment plugins just didn’t quite do the trick as support comments got really messy. It’s much easier to organize support requests in the forum.

I originally started it because comments couldn’t cope with support queries. Glad you find it useful.

Is that Rogers (or is it Rodgers?) you’re talking about? My trips to Canada and trying to get my mobile working has been a dead loss so I’m not much impressed with their service either Frown

Actually it’s a service by the 7-Eleven convenience store, but it runs on the Rogers network footprint.  Surprisingly, people are generally happy with the customer service on the Speak Out service. It’s the lack of public information that prompted me to create the site… so it’s not so much a "we hate them" site but a "hey, how can you do this" site.

In Canada, people aren’t happy with the major wireless carriers, especially Rogers and Telus…

Got SimplePress installed at a site of mine, http://www.cultreviews.com . By the way is there any way to make the 'join the discussion' link above the articles to appear beneath them? I don't really know how to 'call' them.

Glad you like it. Suggest you take a look at the options on the “Manage Options > Links tab’

no, not really… and its done with a filter on the_content(), so a tag or call wont really help.

you would need to modify core code. its in file sf-public.php and the routine is sf_blog_show_link(). you could modify it to ignore the options and output at top and bottom pretty easily, but its still a core mod.

Lots of javascript on the forum though. My site itself uses about 70KB of JS, the forum 306KB… Is there any way to reduce the use of JS?

no, not really…  you can turn off the js checkboxes (user_switches.php)…  we may add a few more options like that in 4.1…  also, future releases will have our js packed which it currently is not…

I just installed Simple:Press on my site at http://webstylee.com and I must say, not only was it painless, it was pure joy. This is one awesome piece of software.

On my site, I offer themes for the big 3 CMS's, WordPress being one of them. I must say, it was a special joy that the software I used to develop the themes actually took into account the possible need of making page templates with/without sidebars. Basically, the CSS includes the entries necessary to account for the width adjustments. Given the complexity of the tutorial on this site regarding making separate page templates, it was nice to see.

Anyway, as I stated in a post on the WordPressMU section here also, I used WordPressMU and everything ran just peachy. I'll have to take a look into developing themes for this plugin.

Yup indeedy,
