I went into the theme and edited the 'Add Topic' to 'New Topic' and 'Add Reply' to 'Reply'. This worked fine untill one of the lates updates I think. I just checked the coding and it was not overwritten, but now those buttons have nothing written in them. I made the changes at the request of my users because they said that the 'Add Topic' and 'Add Reply' were to much alike and were confusing. Thanks

Where those changes made to a default Simple:Press supplied theme or a custom one? If a supplied theme then it would be overwritten on a theme update. That shouldn't cause the text not to display at all though.
If you were using a supplied theme and changed it and don't have a backup then I would download the theme from the Downloads page here and copy it over your current one. That way you are sure everything iis there and fresh.
Then create a custom theme and edit it for your changes.
If you are using a custom theme then some more investigation into it will need to be done.
