Access Denied when saving new post

I have recently updated to 5.4. I have some forums restricted by SP user groups which are mapped and synched with WP roles. When a user tries to submit a post to one of these restricted forums they are getting Access Denied and their user is set to the Subscriber user group. If I re-synch with WP they are added back to the correct user group in SP. They can delete and edit posts without issue. Only when submitting new posts does this occur. I did prune the forums recently and ran the rebuild indexes on them. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it. Any suggestions?

are you using forum ranks?  and what is the setting of the force single usergroup option?  please make sure the forum ranks are not forcing users into another usergroup…

To keep the same functionality for new users without resetting existing users I added and additional rank that is 1 post more than new users to set the user group to subscriber. This seems to be working while keeping the custom ranks for those with higher post counts.
