I noticed that I have these errors in the logs:

those are not errors… but  a notice…  and does not appear related…  we fix these harmless notices when they come up…

so this is after an upgrade from 4.x??  we have had a handful of folks that lost their permissions on the upgrade.. quite frustrating since its not repeatable even with a db backup from before the upgrade…

can you look in your db at the sfauths and sfroles tables?  any entries?

Thanks for the pointers, I don’t have the ability right now to open up the tables, but I will a little later and post the results on that. 

Has anyone been successful at restoring permissions?   I wonder how many of the 500 members have this problem.

its probably the whole table gone…  did you customize the permissions at all?  if not, or minimal changes, might just be worth going to forum – permissions – reset permissions and reset them…  but you would have to then go through and make any customizations to the default permissions you might have done…

if the tables are bad like I suspect, you will have to do it anyway…

That was actually one of the things that I tried.  I cringed when I cleared the permissions.  Then I went through and reset up the permissions for each group.   Still have the same problem.

I noticed something else while troubleshooting.  I tried to add a few more moderators.  I did that, and they exist as moderators.  But when I tried to assign them permissions, I could not give them any.  I could select the buttons, and they turned green.  But after saving the changes, all of my changes went away and the buttons were greyed again.

What does the update message (that appears in the yellow box at the top of the forum) have to say when you update the page? Anything useful?

Yes, I did.  I re-checked and permissions are still set.

One more thing, I do have all members assigned to the groups that they are designated for.

We are going to have to do this one thing at a time – and it could possibly be that your admin save issues are related to permissions any way.

Your permissions – the sfauths table – are basically empty. I am afraid I have no idea why or how but they have all gone missing. The only ones you have in there are from activated piugins. It almost looks as if the ‘reset’ you performed ws interrupted in some way which leaves me wondering if you just have some kind of database update issue effecting everything.

So let’s tackle this one short step at a time.

It can not get any worse than having an empty sfauths table so – in the gorunm admin go to the permissions section, open the ‘Reset Permission’ panel and when displayed click on the ‘reset permissions’ blue button.

When that comes back – i.e., reloads – note the message in the yellow popup. Then click on ‘Manage Permission Sets’ from the menu and open any one of the permission records. There should be something like 40-50 individual permission items within each set.  Do you see all of these or just a small handful? And if still just a small handful what was the message after the reset?

I swear I had reset those permissions once already, but this time it WORKED!

By the way – I noticed from your video that you were changing multiple permission records all at the same time and then using a single update button. You actually need to update them one at a time after a change although I appreciate that is not too clear. (It used to be that if you opened a second permission set to look at then opened one would close making it more obvious. I will have to look into why it is not doing that now).

Thanks for asking about that.  No the admin permissions is still a problem.  I can’t changed those still.

Also I did figure that out about adding the permissions one section at a time.

I haven’t used SPF for about a year.   I hope I can get it all tidied up, because I love the cubepoints plugin, and that is ultimately what got me interested in having a forum on my site again.
