New to this forum, trying to install simple:press on wordpress, and cannot follow the instructions (unzipped files move to plugins directory) since it times out and gives me "connection aborted" each time. Have tried two different file managers and the server-level cpanel, but wonder if there is a trick to this I am missing?

No - a file manager app like the one with cpanel should do just fine. Or any decent FTP client.
If you are having a connection issue then that would more likely be a matter for your ISP or your server hosting - but really these are not big folders.
You could try moving the SP ZIP file to the WordPress plugins folder and then unzipping it there - the panel file manager will allow you to do that... that would only be a single file move.
