Can't upload avatar image

I can’t upload an avatar.  I’ve created one that is only 50px.  I’ve set the maximum size width at 100px.  When I try to upload I get an error message:

Sorry, the gravatar file exceeds the maximum allowed size

What could be wrong?

That message suggests that it is the file size in bytes that is actually exceeding the maximum you have set. You may want to check that and increase that setting…

It’s 50px x 50px image at72 dpi.  The file size is 15.4 kb

Oh, the limit was set at 10420 bytes, NOT KB’s. 

You never see bytes anymore.  Threw me.
