The Featured Images section was added with 5.5.9 to be used for the Open Graph meta tag through the SEO options.. Check out the help popup on the Featured Images panel for more info:

“Use this control to upload forum level featured images. These can be associated with specific forums when editing the forum detail.

Currently, featured images, if one exists, may be used for the Open Graph meta tag and, for this use, images are recommended to be 200px x 200px.”

I dont know much of the Open Graph meta tag, but since it’s on the SEO option page, i supose the featured image show up together with forum text/links in Google search? Or is it something that´s limited to Facebook and social media?

Now that’s a good question!.. I really don’t know much about Open Graph, you may know more than me.

I guess the best way of putting it is that it will work with Open Graph meta tags wherever they are used. It’s my understanding that Open Graph is a Facebook thing but not sure if it’s limited to just Facebook..

I believe it is basically just Facebook.

There is no reason to not consider extending the featured image sub-system for other uses. If anyone has any good ideas for ways we could use it for then please do speak up. No promises of course but you never know…

now – back to my vacation!

Is there a way to globally set the ogimage for all forums? Or do you have to edit each forum to assign it? I do see the benefit of adding different featured images, so that’s cool. Just wondering if you can assign on for all, for now.

Reading the Help, it appears that if no featured image is assigned to a forum, then the featured image for the page (via the WP editor) will be used. Would that be the best way to assign a global ogimage? I also presume the Open Graph SEO options must be checked for this to work.

Afraid there is no option for globally assigning one to all forums…  each forum must be selected individually…   we can consider such an enhancement for a future release…
