Is there functionality for us to backup our forums in version 5? Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question but I havent been able to find a full feature list.

No. Backups should be made of the whole WordPress site not just the forum tables. There are numerous plugins that can help with this including wp-dbmanager or BackupBuddy.
