We currently have special badges and rank badges associated to people, which works great.
However, suppose we want to give someone many badges —
ie, badge for being a trusted poster, a badge for being very helpful, a badge for consistently sharing the site, a badge for being very funny, etc.
How can we give one person many badges? Is this possible?

you can give a user as many special forum ranks and badges as you like… just add them to the special ranks you want… all badges will be shown… of course, normal forum rank is based on post count, so can only have one of those…

Thanks! I didn’t realize that before, however, I noticed that the badges stack one on top of the other, would it be possible to have them be side by side, say, three in a row before it moves down to make another row? Our badges are small squares so they would fit like that.

No, not currently – at least directly in code… you could try to simulate it with css perhaps… everyones width of that column is different, so doing it auto would be difficult…
