I should add that the smiles are not being entered with their short codes it’s the full html link, which seems odd given I am using a plain text editor!

Perhaps I have missed something and I can switch this behaviour back, been through the options loads of times and can’t see anything!

as to safari, can you provide more info?  desktop or mobile?  which device?  which OS?

Also, I assume WordPress, Simple Press and our tinymce plugin are all up to date?  please share the current versions…

Interesting, text smiles get converted i.e : ) without the space becomes 🙂 and listed in the Components > Smilies section of the Admin Panel, it describes how to include them with short codes like : ??? : again without the spaces 😕 

I guessed that the Smiley buttons would insert the text short code version when using the Plain Text Editor and for the html link to be used when using TinyMCE.

Do you know if this is meant to be the case?

no, its supposed to insert the link into the editor.. the smiley is after all an image…  unless you use emojis, but thats different than smiley or emoticons…  the ‘shortcut’ you refer is simply a way to TYPE is shorter.. but it must get converted to an image at some point…  when displayed on the forum, you will see just an image, not html…

so is this ipad?  iphone?  which version of ios?

Safari is notoriously behind other browsers in its js and standards support especially on mobile… wp tends to display tinymce for safari on mobiles… frankly, thought we had too, hence my question about versions…would still like to confirm those…

do you have a link to your site so we can look for any other obvious conflicts?

Also, have you tried another more standards compliant browser (ie chrome or firefox)?  just looking for more data points…

Oh dear, I should have been clearer, I know exactly how the image works thanks, that’s not what I need help with. I can see that the Smileys button section is obviously not smart enough to switch between the two input methods. I am fully aware that whichever method is used the end result is the same, i.e. an image gets inserted. You should check out the short codes, they’re really handy and often faster than clicking the Smiley buttons.

I could easily hack the plugin to input text smileys thinking about it, so please don’t worry about that any more. I am also aware of different browser limitations thanks, that’s not what I need help with.

The bug appears only on Safari on iOS and on a wide variety of iPads and iPhones as reported by our community and others on the web – it seems ubiquitous and exactly as detailed in the link I posted above. As it mentions there, the exact same behaviour can be seen on the TinyMCE website too.

As I have read around I am now pretty sure this is a bug with TinyMCE;

I wonder as SimplePress uses it as key part of the forum if someone else had also experienced this behaviour and had debugged this problem with the keyboard popping up?

It is curious that it has not been mentioned by anyone before and – even more curiously  – we have just been through a process with another user of creating a custom theme and plugin that they specifically test in IOS and Safari – with no mention of this issue!

But here’s the thing… I have just tried it myself on my iPhone and it doesn’t happen – at least on this site.

So regardless of the tinyMCE bug report – I tend to think that there is something else at play here as well. So – first question….  do you have any other WordPress plugins installed that add any sort of component or new toolbar button to tinyMCE intended for use when writing posts and pages?

As to the smileys – can we conform the original statement? Are you saying that using the codes do not work in other editors or even the plain text editor?

Good news to hear it’s not happening on yours, that almost certainly means it’s some conflict somewhere on mine – I’d given up on trying to fix it when I found the other reports – this means it’s probably fixable.

Yes, there are other plugins installed, not loads, but some. I’ll see if I can narrow it down a bit, I’m quite happy debugging on my own at this stage and I’ll report back when I have done everything I can think of.

Re. Smileys:

Using plain text editor the text input smileys work, so I can type : ) without the space and get this 🙂 … the smiley buttons insert an image tag as they are meant to, but this link gets stripped out on post save and breaks the emoticon.

Using the TinyMCE editor both the text input and the smiley buttons work but there is the problem with the scroll on iOS.

Would love to solve the keyboard problem so we can have the TinyMCE back 🙂

Actually could do with some help on whatever the smiley issue is.

Just tried a quick, initial test. One post in each of our 4 editing options.

First added a smiley from the drop down by clicking on it. Then followed that up with a smiley using a typed in code.

All 4 posts resolved as expected with the two smileys. 

Can you perhaps walk me through your issue one step at a time so I can see if I can replicate?

In the plain text editor:

1) Click add topic or post reply

2) Clicking on the smiley button 

3) img tag is posted correctly into post edit box

4) click Submit Reply

5) smiley doesn’t appear

6) inspect source code – img tag not output correctly

I really can’t be any more specific, it’s just the button Smileys in the plain text editor that don’t work.

Sorry, I’ve tried the steps you’ve produced there and have no problems getting smileys to appear in posts. Will have to wait for Andy or Steve to take a look when they are next on.

No -they all work for me just fine as I said above.

So it would seem I have some problems with the theme or a plugin… again good to know that id does work, I might give it a fresh run on a new WordPress install too, see if the problems exist then, I’m guessing from what you have said they won’t.

Anyway, I got dragged away onto something else and wrapping up for the week now, might get chance to look at it over the weekend, but if not Monday!
