Membership permission issues

I am using the latest built of 5 beta and have observed 2 membership related issues:

1. Many people who register at our website, do not get assigned any membership group in forums. So they can read the forums but can’t post. Then I have to manually add them to the Member group from the admin side. (Nice feature that, by the way)

2. So far, it has happened twice that some members who registered automatically got ‘moderator’ role. It has happened to just 4 members out of several hundreds who have registered but i wonder what went wrong with those 4 and that also 2 days apart. I had manually move them from moderator group to member group.

so have configured auto membership on forum – options – member settings?

any membership plugins?

and for the first question, are all those usergroups you have assigned with a permission set to the correct forums?

No membership plugin.

The default role for Guests is set to Guests

and default role for members is set to Members.

Just did a reset on all Global permissions, and default roles and group and forum permissions and also restrcited the individual membership to one group. Let’s see if that helps.

Despite these small challenges of a new software, I must say that I am enjoying your software VERY much! Thanks to the team who have worked hard to develop this. There is nothing even close to this for WordPress platform. coolsmile

Just want to report that today again, one member who registered automatically became a ‘moderator’!

what about forum ranks?  any of those set up?  with auto membership?  forum – components – forum ranks…

does it happen if you create a user from the wp add user admin panel?

This doesn’t seem to go away.  The forum ranks are setup alright.

It doesn’t happen to everyone. For eg, since yesterday, we have had about 1000 new registrations. Around 20 of them sporadically got the role of Moderator and we had to manually move them to the Members group.

1000 new registrations in a day?  Nice!

on forum – options – member settings, can you post a screenshot of the user membership section?

this unique situation is quite baffling to me…  did  you ever do as I asked and see if it occurs when you manually create users in the wp admin?

I did try registering people from admin backend and the members so registered never got mod rights.

looks like you have buddypress too? (sorry if mentioned before)

so are these folks registering in wp or buddypress? still, even through buddypress, not sure how they would get moderator – would be more worried their accounts were not created..

kind of at a loss here… its a unique situation and unsure how it could be happening…

Thanks Mr. papa. Yes, it is a wordpress multisite+buddypress site. We use buddypress form for registration with extended profiles and we use the buddypress option to sync the user data in wp and buddypress.

Nevermind the lack of solution at present. Your forum software is still damn good!

Wish you, your team here and your families a wonderful year ahead!

well, still bothers me… normally, would ask for some credentials and upload some debug code… but since we cant ‘make’ it happen, dont think that would help…

One thing I can add…  our 5.1 release is intended to focus on a tighter integration with both multisite and buddypress… those two will be the primary focus… at least thats the plan… problem is that neither Andy and I know anything about them…confused

Maybe Andy has some other ideas?

Happy New Year!

I look forward to that ‘tighter integration’.

One thing I would like to see integrated is private messaging. Buddypress sites have a built in PM system and it would be nice to integrate it with the forum, instead of using the forum plugin. Using 2 PM systems on 1 site makes no sense.

I have been using wordpress since last 2 years but myself fairly new to multisite and buddypress.

By the way, there are some entries in the error logs for the forum. Do I send them somewhere?

PS: While I was typing this post, I just got two more moderators. LOL!

you can post the errors here… but depends on how old they are… the last few days have been spent cleaning up notices…

I doubt we would put in core some way to use the bp pm… but certainly a plugin could be developed now that could potentially support that… We are hoping that once 5.0 gets in the wild, we start getting some user contributed plugins…
