Trying to install my first plugin, the buddypress integration one, and I’m getting the Fatal error: Out of memory.
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 76808192) (tried to allocate 53 bytes) in ****/wp-includes/capabilities.php on line 778
* My host is 2GB RAM
* My wp-config and php.ini say 128M
I’ve spent almost three hours on this so far and don’t know what the issue is; this doesn’t ever happen, so I have no experience with it.
Edit: trying to add it to my .htaccess results in a crash.
128MB of php memory will often be enough – we can run WP and SP in 64MB. But if you have many other plugins active and a busy website then 128MB these days is looking quite small.
if you can not change the php memory allocation yourself then you may have to ask your host to do so.
Do you know if there is a way to check if the changes I’ve made for 128MB have taken effect? My site is not very active at all, and I’m not sure how many plugins would be considered many, but I have deactivated a ton of bbPress ones since I’m trying to use Simple Press, so I’m actually using far less plugins than I was with no trouble.
If I were to edit my wp-config and php.ini higher than 128MB, what would you suggest?
This article might help. Try a standard increase like for example 64 – 128 – 256.. etc…
If you are confident in increasing the limit yourself, the article I’ve linked to might just help you verify that the changes have occurred without you having to contact your host.
what settings do you have for the wp buddypress plugin?
and perhaps silly question, but the latest version of our buddypress plugin?
First, if it helps any, I’ve installed several of the Simple Press plugins without a hitch, all except the BuddyPress one, so there’s definitely some sort of conflict there.
I have the latest version of WordPress and BuddyPress, and I don’t have any BuddyPress plugins.
Let me know if you need any more info. I’ll try to check out that article tomorrow and test if my php settings really are 128MB.
Ok, according to the php-view-info file, my limit is 120M. The article refers to a plugin which will show me usage, so I installed a plugin which displays the WP limit I’ve defined: 128M. Not sure where the 120M is coming from, but it doesn’t seem relevant, as according to the plugin my setup is only using 24%, or 30.3M.
So there seems to be some sort of overload or something happening when I try to install the BuddyPress plugin for Simple Press. Any ideas on where we should look next to problem solve?
I think there has only been one previous issue similar to this with the BuddyPress plugin. And unfortunately that was resolved by a reinstall so as far as that goes, and with your php memory well within it’s limits I don’t really have any other suggestions. Maybe Mr Papa does, as he had previously asked questions.
Do you have any plugins running addons for BuddyPress that might only activate when BuddyPress is activated? and do you have any BuddyPress modules deactivated? I am basing this purely on the one previously presented problem.

As I’ve said, I do not have any BuddyPress plugins at all. I’m not sure what BuddyPress modules are, but I’ve listed above my exact BuddyPress settings. Was it a BuddPress or a SimplePress reinstall?
Do you know what plugins were involved in that other instance? I’ve had BuddyPress plugins, I’m just curious if there might be some residual code or something, if there’s a coincidence that we could follow there.
which version of buddypress? the latest 2.1?
the couple of memory issues we had over a year ago with our buddypress plugin only showed itself when the notifications module of buddypress was disabled… but this was, of course, fixed… I am not aware of any memory issues currently except yours… guess there could be couple others where folks never came back, but dont recall…
maybe try a test… uninstall our buddypress plugin… deactivate the wp buddypress plugin… activate our buddypress plugin.. then activate the wp buddypress plugin… and see if any difference..
going back to what is happening, does any of the page render when you activate it? have you checked the php error log to see if any additional information?

I deleted the SP BuddyPress integration plugin, disabled my WordPress BuddyPress plugin, uploaded a fresh zip of the SP’s BuddyPress integration plugin and activated it, then went back and activated my WP BuddyPress and no crash. Appears to be working, so far so good.
I tried to mark post #11 as the answer, but for some reason only the first page of the thread has the “mark as the answer” button for me.
really? we are talking about the button within each post content, right? I see it on all posts as admin… logging in as test user, I see it too… only diff is you are topic starter…
will have to run some offline tests…
