Try this
open up the /importers/phpbb.php file. Near the top – around line 48 locate this:

$def->utf8_encode = true;

try changing the true to false of you would and then try again.

But do you also have a suggestion about the Quotes?

After importing a thread from PHPBB to SP all quotes ar shown like this:

may need Andy to answer, we recently added that syntax to the sp bbcode editor, but not sure the importer got the same treatment…

as to syntax, the bbcode reference does say those double quotes should not be there…  and really the end should be … but not sure if related…

I think the problem is that we have found in some instances the phpBB embeds these extra phpBB specific tags in standard bbCode so it becomes non-standard. We can not really account for that I am afraid.
