I’m very confused. Am I really running a version ahead of the one it’s telling me to update to?
I inherited this site and have fairly limited knowledge. Should I just go ahead and update?

Wow. Consider me confused as well – at least at the moment.
I think I would hold off on the upgrade until we can work out why your site is showing a bogus version number.
Could you go to the forum admin > toolbox > Install Log – find the entry that states it is 5.6 and click on the ‘Details’ butto – and then take a small screen-shot of that entry and post it here for us?

Odd. There is NO 5.6 entry there suggesting that perhaps it is simply a little weird display issue.
Personally I would go for it and you only need to update any SP plugins that show up in the WP Update listings.
I would – as always and most strongly – recommend you make a DB backup – just in case. But that is a standing recommendation of course!
