I have a group set up for members who's posts need to be moderated. I'm not sure how but one of the people in this group keeps finding a way to add himself back onto the members group meaning his posts bypass the moderation system'

How can I stop this? The Members group is NOT set to allow people to add themselves to it.

Ooops.. typo in the title 🙂

Off-hand I can only think of 3 things.
One you have covered when you say that they can not allocate themselves to the 'members' group.
The second would be that they are in two groups although I am sure would would have noticed that.
The third would be if you have forum ranks set up so that when a user hits a specified number of posts they are automatically moved to the 'members' group.
Could it be that last one?

I definitely have them only in the "Moderated" group. There's nothing that changes when users hit a specified number of posts (except when they reach 50 they get a different title (not new group) but most of my users including this one are way past 50 anyway).

It's happened with this user multiple times, he doesn't get moved from the moderation group but he DOES end up back on the members group which of course overrides any restrictions I've set up in the moderation group.

Sounds like this is coming down to be a bug in the system?

The only way I can see around it is to activate the members can only be in one group feature but that wouldn't be practical on our forums.

Well I'll tell you what... if it's a bug its a damn obscure one! it has never been raised before and this is something people would notice.

So - have you asked the user of they are doing something out of the ordinary?

I'm waiting to hear back from the user.

Would people necessarily notice? I know if it wasn't for the fact that this involves a user I moderate I wouldn't have noticed... if it was some other group the person was being added to it wouldn't necessarily be obvious at all...

Well for starters it would have been noticed by us here...
many of our users take their user groups and memberships very seriously.
I am not saying there is not a bug - I always leave that possibility open. Just saying that if there is it is extremely uncommon and obscure.

I take my usergroups very seriously but with nearly 9000 members it's easy to overlook things.

If ever something obscure is going to happen, it'll happen to me.. story of my life! confused

Edited to fix typos, I need sleep.

I didn't even know you could do that (is that a new feature with 5?) but I checked and no auto usergroups enabled
