Problem with SP plugin update

I am recently experiencing a problem with SP plugin update inside WordPress.

From WordPress dashboard / updates, the system is telling me that couple of Simple:Press Plugins are available.

If I select one or all of these SP plugins, I am getting an error like below:

The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

Updating Plugin Add User Identities (1/1)

An error occurred while updating Add User Identities: The plugin is at the latest version

All updates have been completed.

The error incorrectly reports the plugin is at the latest version as it’s not the case, I tested with updating one plugin by hand (downloading the update file and unzipping it on the server) it solved the problem and the plugin correctly appeared as updated. How can I fix the problem so I could update all my SP plugins from WordPress dashboard ?

I am using latest WP, latest SP 5.3.1 and regular plugin updates work just fine under WordPress.

Thank you.

I myself do not know why this might happen – maybe Steve will have an idea when he stops by later.

But I do know that the WordPress team have a rewrite planned for the updater because there are many problems with it. What you have experienced is clearly not commonplace so it might be one of the issues the WP team have identified.

no clue really…

what version of add identities is listed in the sp plugins list?  what version is it asking you to upgrade to?  and finally, what version is the plugin really?  check the file itself on wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins/identities/sp-identities-plugin.php

and please verify that the path is correct as I just typed… not identies1 or other number at end… same for the other plugins that say there is an update…

WP Dashboard says:

Add User Identities
You have version 1.0.3 installed. Update to 1.0.4. Requires SP Version 5.3.1.

In the plugin source file (filepath /var/www/mydomain/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins/identities/sp-identities-plugin.php) , I have:

/*
Simple:Press Plugin Title: Add User Identities
Version: 1.0.3

I just mentioned  the problem with the Add User Identities, but it actually happens for most of SP plugins that were recently updated. I have a list of like 20 of them waiting to be updated. As far as I can recall, this issue started with SP plugins updates a few months ago.

WP plugins updates are working just fine and SP itself was update to 5.3.1 with WP plugin update system.

Thank you.

And did you check the folders to ensure none have that spurious number on the end which is the only known and elsewhere reported problem…?

As I posted the path for the Add User Identities plugin, the directory name seem to be the default one, which should be the case for the other directories, no spurious number or anything. I also checked the access rights and the directory are all owned by www-data, which should be the correct setting.

I was wondering if I need to somehow log in to simple-press.com thru my SP server to have access to the plugins and updates ?

In case I’d like to see if I could spot some details on the error reason, which area in SP source code is responsible for the SP plugin update ?

Thanks.

You will see the updater and updater class files…

I quickly checked the source and couldn’t find anything … had to go thru manually downloading/updating each plugin one by one frown

I hope this problem can be reproduced in other environments and fixed in the future.

its extremely rare… less than a handful of reports with over hundred thousand downloads… and wp has acknowledged rare issues they are trying to resolve… not convinced its the same, but 90% of the upgrader is wp…  we are watching it and always trying to duplicate any issue reported by users…

So far we have been unable to reproduce on any of our live or test sites. It is also not an item that has been raised by any other users – although I believe there was one such report last year. This suggests to me strongly that there is something in your own environment that is the root cause although I have to say I wouldn’t know where to start looking…

And believe me – it would be nice to know where and how to fix this – whatever it is.

Hello,

It’s been a while I opened this issue I now have good news: the problem is no more so I felt it was time to update this topic.

The problem existed for a long time even if I always kept everything (my system/WP/SP) up to date.

It’s been a month or two that the SP plug/theme update started to work again. I can hardly point which module was the culprit, if it was WP, SP or some plugin, but I’m glad it’s fixed now wink

Cheers.

Sad not to know the culprit but good news things are back as they should be. Thanks for the update…
