Have you looked into these to plugins:

This Simple:Press plugin allows your users to define tags for your forum topics. It comes with a tags search capability and extensive tag management. Once installed and activated it creates a new Forum Admin panel named Tags. Under the Tags – Options…
Template tags are special, ready-made routines for displaying pieces of Simple:Press Forum information in various locations on your site such as a widget, sidebar or footer. There is a large collection of template tags and recent post widget all included…

Might help in what your looking for to some degree.

Thanks for the tips Robert.

I would still urge the Simple Press developers to consider developing a dedicated plugin to automatically show related/similar topics. Most forum software do come with just option/plugin and wordpress itself has many plugins to show related posts, which work automatically without user created tags. So I guess, it must be possible to do so with Simple Press.

I know they exist but I have never looked at one. So how do the ‘related post’ wordpress plugins work? Because I thought they basically worked using tags…

Anyone?

tags or categories in the case of wp…  randomly picking our words from a post content and then looking for those same random words in other posts wouldnt seem very efficient or reliable…  seems you have to indicate what the keywords (ie tags, category, etc) are for the post…

I dont think they randomly pick words. YARRP does amazing job in finding the related posts in wordpress. They look for words in title, category, description, tags and probably keyword density of the posts. This is stored in a index as the post is generated so that it is much faster to serve the related posts when a post is fetched. It might be worth looking in detail in how YAARP words for wordpress and may be some way can be found to integrate YARP with Simple Press.
