I’m really excited about the new plugin to let people reply or create a topic by email! Once I figure out how to enable it, set up all the emails, etc, I think my community is going to love it! Especially those who mostly log in viva mobile devicesit posting with an iPhone is kind of buggy on my site (seems to be working better here, btw–I’m on an iPhone right now)

Question: I’m using WishList Tags, and my peeps LOVE this feature! I’m assuming that will not work with the reply-by-email plugin (?), however I see that s:p has its own similar plugin to allow users to tag other users. Will this feature work when people reply by email?

 

Also, is there a way for people to see and/or include images when receiving or replying to posts by email?

Curious… does WishList Tags not crash your editor? Or are you not using the tinyMCE editor?

Anyway – to answer your questions. Hopefully Steve can confirm this but the mentions should be just fine with posts by email. Of course, you wont get offered a list of users to select from but as long as the display name is correctly entered (and it is case sensitive I believe) then it should do what it is supposed to do.

As to Posting by Email then it is possible to include attachments if your php server supports the IMAP extension. Most servers do but not always. The Post by Email admin panel section will inform you if this is or is not the case.

Sadly – there is a small bug in the current Subscriptions plugin code that will fail to offer topic subscribers the PBE option but that is corrected in the next update along soon. Or – if really needed – we can walk you through the simple code changes to get it working.

yes, odd since wishlist tags is known to have issues with tinymce since it adds its plugin to it incorrectly…

yes, the mentions stuff should work fine from post by email (must admit, I have never tried)… however, you would want to use @user_nicename in the post content instead of the display name as Andy mentioned… since the user display name can contain spaces and other punctuation, there is no real way to efficiently recognize or search for it when doing the mentions…

Thanks, gentlemen. (I forgot to subscribe to this thread, so only just now saw your replies!)

Is there any more detailed info anywhere about how to go about setting up Reply By Email? I’m stalled because I don’t know how to set up the email addresses in the first place. (Was hoping my more technically-inclined sweetie would tackle this challenge, but he hasn’t jumped on it yet, so it may be up to me. ;) )

Yellow Swordfish: I AM using the tinyMCE editor. It is working again since the latest WL Tags update. If/when WL Tags starts having problems again, I’ll try switching over to the Simple:Press notifications plugin, but in the meantime, I prefer the way WL Tags shows user avatars.

Email accounts would most usually be set up using your hosting control panel. The most common is probably cPanel which has an email account icon and really is very simple to use and has detailed help with it in case you get stuck. I think the key here is to have a stab at it… men are much better at ‘rescuing’ women than doing something for them in the first place :)
