both are really just attempts at increasing social networking type activity on your blog/forum…  users accumulate points for doing various things on your site…  points equate to bragging rights…  or other…  you could allow users more access to things on your site when certain point levels are reached… or give access to downloads… or get free stuff…  or buy stuff… or trade them in for something… etc etc…
